  • Message from the Admissions Office: "Please feel free to share my contact information with families, school personnel, or professionals  interested in learning more about Midland. In addition, don't hesitate to notify me of individuals or schools in your area that I should contact directly.  If you are interested in making your contact information available for prospective families, please let me know. I am hoping to gather a list of 5-10 families. Thank you!" - Amy Graham, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid (Email: admissions@midland-school.org, Phone: 805-688-5114 extension 114).
  • Midland's Educational Technology Philosophy: Midland strives to serve the educational technology needs of students while remaining faithful to the philosophy of the school. The school's goal of evaluating all choices based on needs as opposed to wants results in a carefully planned program that directs resources to technological choices that enhance student learning and understanding while avoiding those technologies that tend to undermine our goals. • Overnight Water Testing: Faculty members Lise Goddard, Cory Cramer, and Jill Redl will take all Chemistry students camping on Midland's property along the Alamo Pintado Creek on Friday night to field test a number of water quality parameters. This upstream testing will be followed by downstream testing to allow students to explore how watershed land use patterns affect water quality of our local creek.
  • Chumash Pow Wow: Ian Cummings and Paul Gelles took students to the Chumash Intertribal Pow Wow on Sunday after Round-Up. Sydney and Sylvia Nwakanma '15, Renata Lozito '13, Emma Thorpe '15, Talei McCloud '15, and Anna Moiseyeva '13 enjoyed the dancing, drumming, and refreshments provided, including Indian tacos and delicious fry bread. They also perused the many jewelery, beads, and clothing stands. Dancers from tribes from all over the country accompanied the Chumash dancers in competetive dancing events. The Grand Entry--in which all the different dancers enter together--was a highlight. A good time was had by all!
  • Host Families Needed: Host families are needed for two of our female international students over Fall Break, October 22-30. Please contact Jill Brady if you would like to be a host family. Thank you!

    Girls' Volleyball
: Varsity played Orcutt Academy on Wednesday and lost in 3; the final game was lost by 2 points. JV lost their first game this season at Orcutt Academy on Wednesday. While the girls were soundly defeated in the first game, they came back strong in the second and maintained a lead through much of the game; unfortunately, Orcutt prevailed. JV is 3-1 thus far.
Cross CountryOn Wednesday, October 5th, Midland's Cross Country teams competed in the first Condor League meet of the year at Thacher. The Girls team placed 4th overall with three runners in the top 20: Phoebe Stokes '12 was 11th, Selena Wrightson '13 was 16th and Lily Brand '12 was 19th. The Boys team was led by Charlie Lehman '13 who finished in 4th place overall and the five scoring runners were all in the top 25.  Even without the two of the team's top-five runners, the Boys team placed third behind Cate and Thacher.  Both teams are looking forward to the next meet at Cate on Wednesday. Click here for 2011 Cross Country album online. (Parents Wilja Happe as well as Ed Carpenter '64 supplied photos that are in the main team album). Please  contact Don Redl if you would like high-resolution copies.
