MIDLAND MINUTES
  • Midland's Seventh Annual Round-Up: This weekend is our annual gathering for current families. We look forward to seeing many of you on campus!  See the schedule.
  • Message from the Junior Class: This year the current Midland junior class, class of 2013, is fundraising for the annual trip to Mascota, Mexico, and the annual "Junior Dance Weekend." This Round-Up weekend the juniors will be selling sweatshirts, shirts, blankets, sweatpants, assortments of delicious treats, and will also be taking family photographs for a small donation. Your support for the junior class is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  • First Guest Speaker of the Year: On Sunday evening, Midland's friend and neighbor, Betty Seaman - loved and widely renowned for her expertise, creativity, and teaching of natural building - gave an excellent talk on natural building using hand-sculpted earth.  Students enjoyed her photographs, listened attentively, and asked Betty lots of questions about cob building techniques.  Betty has a way of inspiring everyone she meets when she shares her stories and images.
  • Marine Biology Trip: Midland's marine biology class had a great low tide field trip to Kashtayit Marine Conservation Area on the Gaviota Coast on Tuesday afternoon.  The site, on the road out to Hollister Ranch, is a rocky shelf rich in anemones, mussels, barnacles, sea stars, and algae.  Sunny skies and careful observations of our coast's marine invertebrates made for a great afternoon.
  • Conservation Easement Sign: The sign acknowledging Midland's Conservation Easement (finalized in 2009) has been installed on Midland's property.
  • Horses Update: Fall season is up and running and after the long summer break the horses have been very eager to work with their students.  We have a very devoted group of student riders this season; despite varying temperatures and swarms of not-so-happy bees these seven riders have been there working with their horses weekly!  The students are learning the basics of horse communication as well as are practicing their bareback riding skills!  They have even had a day where they learned the 7 Pat Parelli Games.
