- Book Talk: On Wednesday, faculty members Lise Goddard and Derek Harwell '88 took four Midland students, Weiler Shafer '13, Shayla Gordon '12, Miguel Provencio '13 and Sunny Pang '14, to Chaucer's Bookstore in Santa Barbara to listen to Diane Wilson talk about her new book, Diary of an Eco-Outlaw: An Unreasonable Woman Breaks the Law for Mother Earth. The Midland students were very interested in what Diane has been doing as an activist in Texas. Miguel share, "Diane, who comes from a long line of shrimp fishermen, had a lot to say about the pollution of her bay, she watched the fish and marine mammals die right in front of her due to the many industrial oil plants which line the bay. What we enjoyed hearing is what she tried to do about it. On several occasions she chained herself as a protest against the industrial companies and spent time monkey-wrenching their plans to detonate charges in the bay. Diane gave up her home, her job, and her husband because she felt so compelled to fight for this cause." Each Midland student had something to share with Diane and she was very impressed with Midland's ethics. Diane was pleased to hear that Midland students practice renewable ethics in everyday life because they are skillful traits that are important in the future.
