MIDLAND MINUTES

  • Celebrating the Life of Barry Schuyler '41: Barry will be missed, and a celebration to honor his life has been scheduled for Saturday, June 4th, 2011, from 1-4 PM at UC Santa Barbara. Read more and see a slideshow of Barry at Midland.
  • Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends Weekend: Ideal weather, Peter Coonradt's '64 "Midland Movies", delicious food, a student art show, an equestrian drill in the arena, a ceremony for the John Dreyfuss '52 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient Warner Henry '55, class reunions,  a dedication at the new corral and a connected community were highlights of the 2011 Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends Weekend, April 30- May 1, at Midland.
  • Surf's Up: Micah Kalem '13, Kevin Jung '11, Diana Jung '14, Weiler Shafer '13 and Juan Mesona '12 accompanied Paul Gelles to Jalama Beach last week for surf club. After learning the appropriate jargon ("cowabunga," "wahoo," and "yowza," among others), it was time to ride the wild surf. Everyone suited up, everyone paddled out, and, despite the constant pummeling of the consistent surf, everyone managed to get several good waves. One to three foot rollers with the occasional bigger sets, slight onshore wind, and rising tide, gave everyone a good work out, and after an hour and a half in the water or so, it was time to rinse and dry off, and head to the beach shack that serves the world-famous Jalama burgers. The students had only heard rumors of the mythical Jalama burger, and the rumors proved true--they were not disappointed. Surfed out and with contented bellies, the intrepid gremmies returned to school as the sun sank over the west. Cowabunga!
  • Owl Watch - The Great Horned Owl Chicks that hatched about a few weeks ago have begun to explore.
  • Freshmen Beach Trip: On Thursday, the freshman class was treated to a Jalama Beach trip where they enjoyed a perfect day at the beach and did some class bonding.
  • Solar Momentum: Midland's "Solar Success" story by Lise Goddard has been gaining momentum, and is now featured in The Epoch Times.
  • Midland Preparedness: On Monday, a small brush fire, caused by lack of a spark arrestor, erupted in Lower Yard. It was put out within minutes by faculty members Tom Rogowski and Paul Gelles, with help from Pebbles Gonzalez '13, while the rest of the community was accounted for in Stillman Hall. Good work, Midlanders!
  • Reminder: End of Year Packing:  Midland students may leave large items over the summer: chair, bureau, lamp, bike, etc. Footlockers that are secure may be left with books and school supplies.  Students must take home all clothing, bedding and towels.  These soft items are prime real estate for mouse nests and will be shredded by September if left behind.  All items left over summer are packed tightly in a cabin and locked until school resumes.

  • Athletics:
    Lacrosse
