MIDLAND MINUTES

  • Barry Schuyler '41: We regret to inform you that Head of School Will Graham received a call from Peter Schuyler this morning reporting the death of his father, Barry, on April 29th. There is no memorial service planned at this time. "The value of Barry's contributions to Midland School is incalculable. He was, truly, one of the guardians of Midland's soul," shares Lise Goddard, Director of Environmental Programs. Will Graham adds, "Barry is the only person I know that had a personal relationship with every Midland Headmaster. Jean and Barry followed the school closely over time, and we have lost one of Midland's most loyal and supportive friends."

Ruby was able to be with her father in London when he received the prize. Congratulations, Jim!

  • Solar Success: Midland's Solar Success story written by Lise Goddard is featured on 350.org.

  • Easter Eggstravaganza: Thanks to human Easter Bunnies Christine Featherstone (mother of Rachel '11) and Margarete Schmidt (mother of Renata Lozito '13), Midland students searched throughout Middle Yard for 600 eggs filled with candy Sunday morning. In addition, the moms hard-boiled 400 eggs for students, faculty and children to decorate.  Prizes were also given to those who found the most eggs. Thanks Easter Bunny Moms!

  • Owl Watch - The Great Horned Owl Chicks that hatched about a few weeks ago have been stepping out of their nest.

  • Students Plan Outdoor Leadership Trip: Over the past weekend, the Outdoor Leadership students took a trip up the coast to explore the southernmost reaches of the Coastal Redwoods (Sequoia Sempervirens) which are the tallest growing trees in the world. The trip was entirely planned and implemented by the students as a part of their training as outdoor leaders. This group -- Nessa Ryan '11, Ammaria Sjos '12, Pebbles Gonzalez '13, Miguel Provencio '13, Brian Bang '13 and David Salehpour '14 -- is on their way to being able to plan and lead their own trips here at Midland.

  • Fore!  Braving a serious gale, Jose Juan Ibarra '87, Ian Cummings, and sophomores Charlie Lehman, Weiler Shafer, and Emmet Yeazell joined former faculty member Matthew Eames for a round of golf at the Rancho Maria course in Orcutt on Tuesday.  Fortunately, the wind was strong enough to provide everyone who needed an excuse - all but Mr. Eames - an explanation to offer for their poor play, although it probably didn't account for Emmet's shot that knocked a hubcap off a golf cart.  In any case, everyone enjoyed a good time.

  • Grass Mountain Day: Monday, April 25th was our annual Grass Mountain Day!
  • How Now Brown Cow: This week, a determined calf has been trying its best to assimilate into Midland culture--only it doesn't realize it's a cow, not a student. Sunny Pang '14 reports, "I first saw him in Middle Yard, and was able to get him into the large horse pasture. The next day, he was outside my math classroom. He was also seen on the soccer field and in the garden. He's really sweet and I named him Mabel. I realize that's a female name, but he doesn't know the difference."

  • End of Year Packing:  Midland students may leave large items over the summer:  chair, bureau, lamp, bike, etc. Footlockers that are secure may be left with books and school supplies.  Students must take home all clothing, bedding and towels.  These soft items are prime real estate for mouse nests and will be shredded by September if left behind.  All items left over summer are packed tightly in a cabin and locked until school resumes.
