Senior symposium is when seniors share their research with the entire school in a formal presentation. This year's presentations were some of the very best we've seen. This is a day we always look forward to at Midland. We're proud of our seniors!

 | In Memoriam
| We are saddened to report that Jack McCurry '89 passed away on March 19, 2011, after being diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago. A service was held in Carpinteria, CA on Saturday, March 26, 2011. Here's a link to the obituary that appeared in the Santa Barbara Independent.
Robert J. Cross '52 passed on March 31, 2011.
Frank Marshall '44 passed away on April 1, 2011. Here's a link to his obituary.
Barry Schulyer '41: We regret to inform you that Head of School Will Graham received a call from Peter Schuyler this morning reporting the death of his father, Barry Schuyler '41, on April 29th. There is no memorial service planned at this time. Born in 1923 in Brooklyn, New York, Barry founded the Alchemists Club at Midland in 1939, and graduated from Midland A.K. (Age of Kerosene) in 1941. In 1949, he married Jean Kellogg, and from 1951-1959, Schuyler was a Math and Science Teacher at Midland. From 1955-1998 he served several terms during these years as a Director on Midland's Board of Trustees. In 1999, with an initial gift and pledge to match future gifts, Barry kicked off the first Endowment for Midland's Scholarship Fund campaign with Bill Kimpton '54. Barry Schuyler has always been the heart of Midland's environmental programs, and in 2003, he conceived of and funded a faculty position dedicated to integrating environmental programs with Midland's mission of academic rigor, guided by an environmental advisory board. He followed the progress of this undertaking through his final month with us, with unending support and sage advice regarding building our campus's renewable energy infrastructure alongside our students. Outside of Midland, from 1970-1990, Barry was a Trustee at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History; the Board President from 1975-1978, and again in 1988. In 1996 he earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering from UCLA, and was a Lecturer Emeritus in Environmental Studies at UCSB. In 2000, Barry, with his wife, received the Santa Barbara News-Press Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2005 the Schuylers received the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. "The value of Barry's contributions to Midland School is incalculable. He was, truly, one of the guardians of Midland's soul," shares Lise Goddard, Director of Environmental Programs. Will Graham adds, "Barry is the only person I know that had a personal relationship with every Midland Headmaster. Jean and Barry followed the school closely over time, and we have lost one of Midland's most loyal and supportive friends." |

Your Friends at Midland School
