 | Midland School's Experiential Week
|
 | Luke Carpenter '12 (far right) meets his host family in Mascota, Mexico

Each year for a week in the Spring, Midland students participate in activities by class/grade level. The purpose of this week each year is to take trips and do activities as entire classes that supplement our curriculum and our mission, with our students having experiences in the field rather than the classroom. Experiential Week this year is this coming week, March 28 through April 1.
Freshmen: Through the theme of Home from Your Perspective, the freshmen will explore their personal vision of home in a week-long experiential learning project informed by their curriculum and the mission of the school. In addition, the freshmen students will head out on a "Tall Ship" trip to Santa Cruz Island. They will help sail the 137 ft. schooner out to the islands, cook, do chores, and be a part of "watch" teams both day and night.
Sophomores: The 10th graders install a 3-kW photovoltaic (PV) array on campus that makes a measurable impact in meeting campus electricity needs. The spring of 2011 will be our 8th consecutive year of 10th graders installing an array on campus (it will be our 7th 3-kW array following a small pilot project). This year, we will add a wind component to our study of renewable energy, spending 2 days working with Mathias Craig '96 and blueEnergy.
Juniors: While the other classes participate in a one-week experience, each Midland junior partakes in a two-week homestay with individual families in Mascota, Jalisco, Mexico. This is a cultural and language exchange, wherein Midland students get to experience life in a small and wonderfully welcoming town. Read updates from the current trip in progress.
Seniors: As part of the work toward completing his or her Senior Thesis, each senior spends one week interviewing or interning with experts who are working in the senior's area of interest. This off-campus experience is designed to give each student specific and concrete insight into their thesis topics and career interests. |
 | Raku Firing |
 | | Midland Ceramics students display their completed Raku pots |
In March, visiting ceramic artist Mike McNutt took students through the traditional Japanese method of firing known as Raku. Raku involves firing pots quickly, taking them out of the kiln red hot, and placing them in a can filled with newspapers or other organic combustibles, which is in turn quickly covered to reduce oxygen. The results are always variable and surprising, and everyone had a lot of fun seeing how their pots came out of the can.

| Nora Livingston '07 is currently on Santa Cruz Island following around Island Scrub-jays and sitting quietly watching them interact with their mates, their neighbors, and other island inhabitants. She shares, "This place is beautiful and full of stories--biology, geology, cultural history, controversy, you name it. I am very fortunate to be able to take the time to live out here for three short months." Read and follow Nora's blog.

 | In Memoriam
| We are saddened to report that Mike Hermes '57 passed away on Saturday, February 19. Mike was fighting melanoma. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth.
Message from the Hermes Family via Tim MacAlpine '57:The Hermes family is deeply grateful to the many alumni and friends of the school who extended their love and support to Mike during the course of his illness. It was Mike's express wish that no services for him be held. He simply did not want people to be inconvenienced on his account. He also asked that any donations in his memory be made to the Ojai Valley School. The Hermes family |
