 | Midland Basketball Team Makes CIF Playoffs/Midland History!
|
 | | Shane Williams '12 scores early in the game |
This year's basketball team has shown us skills and thrills! Making Midland history by earning a spot in a wild card game for the CIF playoffs, the Oaks also make it to the Southern Section quarterfinals for Division 6A.
In the wild card game, Midland beat Southwestern Academy (San Marino), 76-34, on Wednesday, February 16th.
Then, Midland came from behind to beat Lee Vining, 58-53, on Friday, February 18th. Midland overcame a rocky start as the Oaks were affected by the 7000 ft. elevation. Finally, the Oaks fell to the top seeded-team in the Division, Padre Pio Academy, 74-53, but not after putting up a valiant fight. The entire school went to support the team at Santa Ynez High School's gym. Faculty member Ian Cummings introduced the teams, and Ray Duncan '14 sang the National Anthem. It was a momentous occasion, filled with true Midland spirit. See highlights and photos. |
 | Backpacking Trip for Midland 101 Students
|
 | | Midland 101 students crossing one of many creeks | Midland freshmen went on a backpacking-camping trip to the back part of Midland's property on the Manzana River with Derek Harwell '88. Other faculty members who joined for part of the trip were Hayley Anson, Cory Cramer, Ben Munger '79 and art instructors Johnny and Ashleigh Ninos. It was the first-ever backpacking trip for all but 2 students. The students learned interdisciplinary skills as they hiked, backpacked, camped, and made art in nature using stones, leaves, sticks and other "found" objects. The assignment was to create site-specific outdoor installations, using the work of Andy Goldsworthy as inspiration.

 | The Latest on Midland's Farm/Garden, Horse Program and Environmental Program | |
Garden: This winter season's Garden Crew led by Ben Munger '79 and Katie Isaacson also included students Meghan Brown '11, Savannah Bryant '12, Becca Rantanen '12 and Selena Wrightson '13. In addition to extensive weeding, the crew moved fencing, planted lettuce, witnessed early blossoming of the almond trees, moved cattle and even did some pig-herding. Katie pruned the fruit trees this month, and the students in Midland 102 planted their own garden plots.
Horses: Kevin Jung '11, Meghan Brown '11, Ruby Goldberg '11 and Gabriela Rocco '14 were Midland's first "Foal Training Class" students. Local horse trainer, Rouven Krauer came to Midland to demonstrate some training techniques to the Foal Training class. New hitching posts were installed in February. Also, Midland received a rescue mule named Timmy, who has been a wonderful addition to the Midland herd. Environment: Every class participated in planting native valley oaks during the Saturday meeting periods this winter. Midland School is featured on the Green Schools Alliance website. At almost 2,000 member schools, the Green Schools Alliance is the largest national and global organization focused on sustainability in education. |

Bob Shafer '54 sends a link to a photo essay of a bike trip. He shares,"In about 1950, I took this bike trip over Figueroa to Cachuma Saddle on an old fat-tired bike, panned about 10 pounds of liquid mercury at the abandoned mercury mine, and pedaled back to Midland with my prize."
