- San Francisco Gathering for Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends: We look forward to seeing several of you at tonight's gathering.
- Santa Barbara Mayor Honored Midland Students: On Monday, January 31, 2011, Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider honored and recognized Midland School students and faculty members who volunteered for Project Healthy Neighbors in Santa Barbara in November 2010. - New Class Presidents: Members of the new student council were chosen in recent elections. New class presidents are Meghan Brown '11, Peter King '12 and Madison Mayhew '14. Kirby Kersels and Luke Carpenter were re-elected to their respective posts as sophomore class president and junior-at-large. School Prefects Mariah Chen and Shue Him Lau will also continue serving on the council.
- Three-Dimensional Self-Portraits: Honors Art and Beginning Ceramics students recently joined forces to create three dimensional self-portraits. Faith Nygren, Midland's Ceramics instructor, introduced both additive and subtractive sculpting methods with which students could choose to work.
- Midland School Featured: Midland is featured on the Green Schools Alliance Website. At almost 2,000 member schools, the Green Schools Alliance is the largest national and global organization focused on sustainability in education.
- Garden Plot Signs: The freshmen made signs for their garden plots in Midland 102, taking time to learn about woodworking in the wood shop along the way. It was a fun project and a way for students to distinguish their work out in the garden.
- Bow and Arrow: With instruction from Ben Munger '79, students in Midland 101 used an atlatl and bow and arrow made of local materials to learn about the different technologies introduced to North America by peoples from Asia who migrated into North America.
- Students Attend Talk on Solar Technology at UCSB: On Monday, January 31, Lise Goddard and Anthony Harvey '04 took 16 10th graders to a talk at UCSB by solar historian and author John Perlin, who spoke about the history of photovoltaics, beginning in the late 1800s with Selenium-based PV cells. It was a talk of general interest offered by the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management. It was a great opportunity for our sophomores, who will begin their solar unit in Chemistry next month to prepare them for installing Midland's 7th 3-kW PV array during Experiential Week in late March. John is the world's expert on the history of solar energy and its applications, and he is a friend of Midland School. He was honored to have Midland students in the audience.
- Camping Trip for Three Seniors: January 26-28th, seniors Mara Gabriel, Ruby Goldberg, Daniel Nimmo and faculty member Laurie Munger went camping at the Manzana. They stayed at Coldwater Campground both nights and took a short hike to Horseshoe Bend Campground. The weather was warm during the day and cold at night. It was perfect timing for the three seniors to get away after completing a busy first semester.

- New Non-Competitive Sports Option: This year during the Winter 2010-11 sports season, a new non-competitive sport was offered: Yoga and Pilates with Ashleigh Ninos.
- Past Midland Coach Bill Bertka Visited Midland: Coach Bertka was the first Basketball Coach at Midland, and returned last Friday for a visit.
Basketball: Last Friday the team played Cornerstone Christian at Midland and won 48 to 27. Peter King '12 led all scores with 13 points. Saturday Midland played Thacher and lost 59 to 46. Luke Carpenter '12 scored 14 and Evan Kidd '11 contributed 13. On Wednesday, Midland played Orcutt Academy in a JV game. Zack Dib '13 and Kendrick Holmes '12 both contributed 15 points for the non-league JV game. Midland finishes the season Saturday with a game against Providence Hall at Carpenteria High School at 5:30 PM. Click here to see photos of the game against Thacher.
Soccer: The Midland Boys' soccer team recorded victories against Ojai Valey and Orcutt to improve its record to 6-4-1 (4-4-1 in the Condor League). At Ojai Valley, the Oaks came from behind to win for the third time this season, as John Lee '11, scored two second-half goals - the second on a 45-yard free kick in the 80th minute - to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory. Lee also assisted on a first-half goal by Marcus Schmidt '12. Lee continued his scoring with two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over Orcutt Academy in a non-league match on Wednesday. Lee opened the scoring with a free kick from 35 yards out in the 9th minute and assisted on a 24th-minute goal by Miguel Provencio '13. The game remained highly competitive until its last five minutes, when Schmidt and Lee scored the Oaks' final goals. Click here to see photos of the Boys' JV team.
The season concludes with matches at Villanova on Saturday, at Orcutt on Wednesday, and at Dunn on Friday, when Midland will attempt to take back the Isaacson Cup for the first time since 2000.
