- Films by Midland Alums Featured at Santa Barbara International Film Festival: From Caitrin McKiernan '98: "I am writing to invite you to the world premiere of Bringing King to China, a documentary film my dad made about my work in China. It will premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 7:45 PM at the Lobero Theater." It will be shown again on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, at 4 PM at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street. Also, Rick Sawyer '70 is an executive producer of To Be Friends, which will be shown at the Lobero Theater on Saturday, January 29, at 10 PM, and also at the Metro 4 on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 4 PM. - "Midland" Joins "Midland Stories" on the Web: Two years ago Peter Coonradt '64 finished his first film about Midland, and it got wide acclaim when it was distributed on DVD. A couple months ago we announced that Peter's sequel, "Midland Stories," can be seen online at http://www.midlandstories.com/. Now the first movie, titled simply "Midland," can also be seen via the Midland Stories website. "It's better to watch Midland first, then Midland Stories," Peter said. "Otherwise it's like taking Geometry 1B before Geometry 1A.The second movie stands on the shoulders of the first one." Please help spread the word about these two powerful films. - Carbon Sequestration: Faculty member Katie Isaacson along with Miles Dakin '13 and Kirby Kersels '13 attended a one day carbon sequestration workshop at the Morris Ranch near Hollister, California on Monday. The leaders in the field of carbon sequestration and grazing made short presentations, they toured parts of the Morris Ranch, and worked in groups discussing carbon sequestration.
- WASC Accreditation: Mr. Graham participated as part of a review team this week for a WASC accreditation of another school, just like Midland's accreditation process last year.
- Wild Horses: On Tuesday, Rouven Krauer, a local horse trainer, came to demonstrate some training techniques to the Foal Training class. Rouven demonstrated the effectiveness of timing, pressure, and release when working with young horses. He emphasized working with a horse in small steps, so that the horse can be as comfortable and as unworried as possible.
- The Camping Trip Continues... Ranch Manager Ben Munger '79 reports, "We are clearing the Birbent Trail that connects Midland's property to the National Forest. We have spent two Saturday nights and two Sunday Work Periods sawing, cutting, chopping, and having a good time. The trip started off as a Fire Crew project, but we welcome other students and faculty to participate. We have reached the drift fence in Birbent Canyon, approximately 1/2 mile from the Forest border."
- Educating for Sustainability Conference: On Saturday, faculty members Lise Goddard and Derek Harwell '88 along with students Weiler Shafer '13, Kirby Kersels '13 and Miguel Provencio '13 attended a "Regional Green Schools Alliance" conference at Besant Hill School. The keynote presentations focused on plastics in our oceans and taking responsibility for the Urban Environment.
- Rustic Pathways: Two representatives from Rustic Pathways visited Midland on Tuesday to talk about various opportunities during summer and gap year.
- DOGS OF MIDLAND Calendar: As a fundraiser for the Junior Class, Gillian Beery-Beesley has taken pictures of Midland dogs and has made a calendar, "Dogs of Midland." The calendars will be ready to go home with students over Winter Break (February 12-20) and cover February 2011-January 2012. PLEASE EMAIL GILLIAN to order your calendar by January 31st! Calendars can be paid for with cash or check and are $20 each.100% of profits go to the Junior Class for trips and/or Dance Weekend.
- Students Invited to Participate in Film: Assemblymember Das Williams seeks survivors of the Holocaust or veterans who participated in the liberation of concentration camps, who now live locally, to tell their stories as part of the California State Assembly Holocaust Memorial Project. Williams is also looking for local high school and college students who are interested in learning more about the Holocaust by participating in this project for California Holocaust Remembrance Week in April.

- Past Midland Coach Bill Bertka Visits Midland Today! Coach Bertka was the first Basketball Coach at Midland and built the court at the time. He went on to coach at the college and professional levels, including the LA Lakers. The Santa Barbara News-Press is doing a feature story on Coach Bertka and Midland Basketball. Stay tuned.
Basketball: Thacher defeated Midland on Saturday 68 to 41. Ted Kim '12 led Midland with 17 points. Luke Carpenter '12 contributed 7 points and 6 rebounds, and Shane Williams '12 had 6 points and 8 rebounds. On Wednesday, the OVS JV team defeated Midland's JV 46 to 40. Tavita Mafi '12 scored 10 points, Peter King '12 had 12 points and Kendrick Holmes contributed 10 points. Midland plays Cornerstone on Friday and Thacher on Saturday.
Soccer: Playing its best soccer in years, the Boys' varsity soccer team lost a 2-0 heartbreaker at Thacher on Saturday before rebounding to beat Orcutt Academy, 6-2. The match against Thacher was scoreless with less than ten minutes remaining when the Toads converted a penalty kick after a disputed referee's decision. Despite the game's result, Thacher coach Fred Coleman called Midland's team the best he's seen in his twenty-seven years in the Condor League. At Orcutt, Danny Lee '11 registered his first two varsity goals along with two assists in a match in which all the scoring occurred in the first half. Estevan Murillo '11 opened the scoring for Midland in the 6th minute with an attempted cross from the right corner that dropped into the net over the Orcutt goalkeeper's head. Drew Lundgren '13 and John Lee '11 added goals before Orcutt scored to narrow the lead to 3-1. Danny Lee then scored his pair, and Marcus Schmidt '12 broke through for a one-on-one goal to make it 6-1. Midland improved to 4-4-1 with the non-league win and returns to Condor League play at Ojai Valley on Saturday.
Midland Girls played the San Luis freshman team on Saturday and tied, and beat Oak Grove on Wednesday. Girls play Oructt at home today at 3:30. - Helpful Contact Information:
