  • MLK Day: On Monday, January 17, 2011, Midland faculty and students participated in several activities in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with themes of service and compassion.  See the article featuring Midland's MLK Day in the Santa Barbara News-Press.
     
  • Midland School Informational Open House:  Please help spread the word to prospective families about our upcoming Open House on Thursday, January 27, 2011 from 6:30 - 8:00 PM at Joe Momma's Beachstay at the corner of San Luis Street and Front Street in Avila Beach, CA. Thank you to the Kidd family for hosting this event!
  • San Francisco Gathering for Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends: Please join us on Friday, February 4, 2011.
     
  • New Riders: Four students, Martin Huerta '11, Kaya Lindsay '11, Sunny Pang '14 and LaQoia Thompson '14 all enjoyed a lesson and horse ride in the arena. It was their first time riding a horse, and before mounting her horse, LaQoia said, "This is the closest I've ever been to a horse!"  They all had a great first experience, thanks to Gillian Kinnear '04 and Celeste Carlisle.  See "This Week in Horses" on the website.
     
  • Mozzarella: On Thursday during Half Holiday, faculty member Roddy Taylor with students Nessa Ryan '11, Wes Harting '11 and Savannah Bryant '12 made mozzarella cheese.
     
  • Grazing Conference: Ben Munger '79 and Katie Isaacson, along with Trustee Pam Doiron, went to a conference called California Rangeland Conservation Coalition Summit this past week. The conference brought together environmentalists and ranchers to listen to speakers who focused on the relationship of grazing to wildlife, soils and water in the Central Valley. The key message was continued excellent stewardship of grazing lands in California is crucial to habitats for several species that are threatened in the region. This relates to Midland in that we strive to balance the use of grasses and food production with excellent stewardship and education.
     
  • Thailand Opportunity: On Thursday evening, January 20th, Mac Bakewell made his annual appearance at Midland to promote his summer program in cultural exchange and international service, Inside Thailand. Over the past fifteen years, several Midland students have joined Mac and his family for a month in Thailand during the summer.
     
  • Senior Send-Off: College Counselor Lynda Cummings met with the current seniors for the last time this year and gave them her parting words of wisdom before they head off to their various post-Midland experiences.
     
  • Experiential Education Conference: Director of Outdoor Programs Derek Harwell '88 attended the Independent Schools Experiential Education Network (ISEEN) Institute this past week. He reported that there were great schools represented from around the country, and that the Institute provided a great forum for interesting discussions.
     
  • DOGS OF MIDLAND Calendar: As a fundraiser for the Junior Class, Gillian Beery-Beesley has taken pictures of Midland dogs and has made a calendar, "Dogs of Midland." The calendars will be ready to go home with students over Winter Break (February 12-20) and cover February 2011-January 2012. PLEASE EMAIL GILLIAN to order your calendar by January 31st! Calendars can be paid for with cash or check and are $20 each.100% of profits go to the Junior Class for trips and/or Dance Weekend.

    Basketball: Midland lost to Besant Hill (the 1st place team in the Condor League) 60 to 55. Ted Kim '12 led the Oaks with 19 points.  Luke Carpenter '12 and Shue Him Lau '11  contributed 8 points each. 5'9" Shane Williams '12 had 10 rebounds against the 6'8", 6'4'' and 6'3" Besant Hill Coyotes.     Soccer: Boys' Varsity ran its undefeated streak to four games on Saturday with a 7-0 win over visiting Ojai Valley.  John Lee '11 scored twice for the Oaks, once from 60 yards with a long ball that bounced over the goalkeeper's head, and Estevan Murillo '11, Paul Kim '12, Marcus Schmidt '12, and Sae Young Yeo '12 each tallied once, with an additional score coming on an own goal. Goalkeeper Martin Huerta '11 recorded four saves and his first shutout of the season. See photos of the Dunn game on Friday.
    On Wednesday, the Oaks fell to undefeated and top-ranked Cate, 5-0, for the second time this season. On defense, Drew Lundgren '13 was outstanding, shutting down Cate's star striker, Avery Schwartz, who was not involved in any of the Rams' goals. The loss leaves Midland with a record of 3-3-1, good for second place in the Condor League. The team faces Thacher on Saturday at 3:00 in Ojai. 

    Junior Varsity Boys suffered two losses this week, 5-2 at Oak Grove and 3-1 against Cate. Brian Bell '13 scored both of Midland's goals in the first match, and Junjie Zhao '12 tallied against Cate with a nice assist from Miguel Provencio '13. See photos of the Cate game.
     

     
    The Girls' soccer team beat OVS 5-2 last Saturday and lost against Thacher 1-0 Wednesday. Coach Jose Juan Ibarra '87 reports, "It's fair to say that four of our starters were sick and unable to play, yet we played well. Freshmen girls Kira Hooper and Ray Duncan stepped up and helped the team without any prior experience with our team."
