MIDLAND MINUTES
  • HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  • Thank You Kidd Family!  A heartfelt thank you goes to the Kidd family: Michael, Mary Kay, Austin, Alexis '08 and Evan '11 for raising money over the Holiday Break for Midland's Annual Scholarship Fund.

  • Midland School Informational Open House:  Please help spread the word to prospective families about our upcoming Open House on Thursday, January 27, 2011 from 6:30 - 8:00 PM at Joe Momma's Beachstay at the corner of San Luis Street and Front Street in Avila Beach, CA. Thank you to the Kidd family for hosting this event!
  • San Francisco Gathering for Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends: Please join us on Friday, February 4, 2011.

  • Finance Class: On Wednesday night, Don Redl and six of his students (Martin Huerta '11, Eliad Becker '11, John Lee '11, Diego Marcogliese '13, Charlie Lehman '13 and Micah Kalem '13) attended an orientation course at Allan Hancock College to begin their training as volunteer income tax preparers.  Under the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA), the students will be learning how to prepare taxes for low-income families in the Santa Ynez valley.  This is the third year that Midland has participated in the program which helps families with very little understanding of tax law obtain all of the credits and deductions for which they are eligible.

  • Environmental Advisory Board (EAB) Meeting: On Thursday, Midland's EAB convened to discuss the genesis of Midland's environmental ethic, from two angles: 1) the historical memory of members of Midland's Kerosene Age (Barry Schuyler '41 and Mason Willrich '50) and 2) how to frame Midland's story to serve as a model for creating an environmental ethic that sticks.

  • It's Cold Outside (and Inside!): This week has been a cold one and students have done a great job at finding ways to stay warm. School Prefect Mariah Chen '11 studied at the Graham's house earlier this week with hat, quilt and dog to help keep her warm while she did her homework.

  • Athletics: See Midland's sports section online for the Soccer and Basketball schedules and updated photographs.

Basketball: Midland is currently ranked first in the latest Max Preps 6A Poll (out of 59 teams)! The team is 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Condor league. Midland fans can follow the team at the Max Preps website devoted to high school sports. Midland plays Dunn at 6:30 PM today at home.

All (Basketball and Soccer) teams have games tomorrow.
