MIDLAND MINUTES
  • "Midland Stories" is the sequel to "Midland," a film by Midland alumnus Peter Coonradt '64. Composed of 19 chapters, "Midland Stories" is a labor of love and a true masterpiece. If you haven't taken a look yet, please make some popcorn, enjoy the videos, and even more importantly, share this link to "Midland Stories" with your family and friends!

  • Helping in the Community: The Common Ground Service Club organized a food/clothing/toy drive over Thanksgiving. They spent this week sorting and packaging items, and delivered them to People Helping People in the valley on Thursday.

  • Musical Performance: Lauren Sheehan, mother of Luke Carpenter '12 gave an inspiring musical performance and demonstration on Saturday evening.

  • A Mule for Midland: Late Wednesday night, Timothy the mule arrived at Midland. He was on his way to the slaughter house in Washington when Celeste Carlisle, Director of Midland's Equestrian Program, was able to step in and save him. He is so happy to be at his new home, and his introduction to Tango, the herd leader, couldn't have gone better. Ben Munger '79 has been wanting a mule that can work in the garden for a while. It's an all-round happy ending!
  • Special Request for Photos!!  If you have taken photos at a Midland event, or have  campus and community pictures, please send them to Karen Readey. We have received many excellent photos from parents, alums and students. We may feature them on the website and in our various publications. Thank you!!

  • Geometric Art: Faculty member Phil Hasseljian had his Geometry students use geometry tools, compasses and a straight edge to create designs that would make cool tattoos. The students created geometric designs on paper, transferred them and ended up with temporary henna tattoos.

  • Bilingual Quotes: Students in Jose Juan Ibarra's '87 Spanish class each made a sign with a quote that is in English on one side and Spanish on the other side. The signs are posted throughout Middle Yard.

  • Midland Afternoon Hike: On Tuesday afternoon, Nessa Ryan '11, Daniel Nimmo '11, David Salehpour '14, Miguel Provencio '13 and faculty member Cory Cramer climbed up Grass Mountain as far as the Upper Face before following a deer path around behind it to explore rumors of a cave. They never found the cave, but did find some really cool exposed ledges which made for fun climbing back to the Northwest ridge.

  • The Library Advisory Board students have nearly finished processing all of the books that they bought at Chaucer's two weeks ago. Circulation is way up! You'll probably see quite a few of these new books coming home for holiday reading. Anything that LAB students wanted for the library, but couldn't find at Chaucer's, has been added to our Amazon Wish List.

  • Athletics: See Midland's sports section online for the Soccer and Basketball schedules and updated photographs.

Basketball: Midland defeated Coastal Christian (Arroyo Grande) 92 to 41 on Saturday, and defeated Cate 52 to 48 on Wednesday. The team is 2-0 and plays Dunn today at 5:30 PM.

Girls' Soccer: Lost to Coast Union on Wednesday. Next game is tomorrow at home against Oak Grove.

Boys' Soccer: JV and Varsity boys both lost 5-0, at Cate on Wednesday. Varsity stayed in the match for quite a while, holding Cate scoreless until the 38th minute and trailing only 1-0 at halftime. Despite surrendering five goals, Martin Huerta '11 had an outstanding game as goalkeeper, registering eight saves and earning post-game kudos from the Cate coaches.

    Yoga/Pilates:
This new sport option has been added to the winter line-up this year, and is coached by faculty member Ashleigh Ninos. Midland's yogis are using the space in Munger Commons for their Yoga and Pilates practice.  In order to further their fitness goals they also travel once a week to the YMCA in Santa Ynez to utilize their cardio, weight, and pool facilities.  On a similar note, just in time for exams, Marguerite Graham is currently offering students a five week course in stress reduction called A Taste of Mindfulness.
