- Project Healthy Neighbors: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, Midland students and faculty members volunteered at Project Healthy Neighbors. Organized by Ken Williams, father of Shane Williams '12, the project provided hundreds of people outside the Casa Esperanza shelter in Santa Barbara with clothing, flu shots, tuberculosis screenings, drug and alcohol counseling and even dental care, and helped the homeless prepare for winter weather.
- Midland's Oak Restoration Project Continues: All the students will plant seedlings germinated from Midland valley oak acorns in 18" pots. We are fortunate to have the seedlings since this Fall was a low point in the cycle of valley oak acorn production, unlike other years when the acorns drop by the hundreds. The area targeted for planting this year is the fenced off riparian area on the Figueroa Mountain Road side of Alamo Pintado Creek, just past the syncline well and the pump house. The freshmen planted with Lise Goddard, Derek Harwell '88 and Ben Munger '79 on Saturday, November 13. Sophomores will plant seedlings on Saturday, November 20, with Lise Goddard and Cory Cramer. A group will go out every Saturday during Meeting Period until all the students have helped to plant "Mighty Oaks."
- Music Club: Owen Plant of the Sunshine Brothers is leading a Music Club on Thursday half-holiday afternoons. Ray Duncan '14 took advantage of the first club meeting and jammed with Owen.
- Annual Book Buying Trip: Midland's Library Advisory Board, comprised of several students, went on its annual book-buying field trip on Tuesday.
- Horse Camping Trip: Last Saturday, Gillian Kinnear '04 and Celeste Carlisle led a group of fearless riders past the Indian Mounds and Senior Cabin, then steeply up towards Holly Spring. Riders Anna Moiseyeva '13, Gabriella Rocco '14, Kendall Cook '13, India Salter '14, and Tenaya Storm '14 then rode into a reddened sunset and back around Serpentine Mountain to Tank Mesa.
- Geology Field Trip: Laurie Munger's Geology class took a field trip to observe the pillow basalts by Avila Beach. Laurie says, "This excellent cliff exposure demonstrates the bulbous formation of basalt extruded onto the ocean floor. The basalts are approximately 150 million years old. We also stopped at Shell Beach to sketch the Monterey Shale Formation. The exposure here demonstrates a synclinal fold, where the rock layers have been bent into a fold resembling a "U" shape. Jeff Goddard helped drive and also spotted features in the Monterey Shale I have never seen before: he found diatoms (tiny siliceous skeletal remains of plankton) in the layers of the Monterey Shale." Students on the trip were Daniel Nimmo '11, Estevan Murillo '11, Eliad Becker '11, Wes Harting '11, Riley Martin '11, Nessa Ryan '11, Mara Gabriel '11, Ellen Rafferty '13, and Anna Paris-Behr '12.

Friendly Coed Soccer Scrimmage: On Thursday, Anacapa School defeated Midland, 4-3, in a coed scrimmage that included about two dozen Midland students. John Lee '11 scored twice to give Midland an early 2-0 lead, and Sae Young Yeo '12 tallied a late goal to finish the scoring.
Cross Country: Last Saturday, the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams represented Midland in the Southern Sectional Prelims at Mt. SAC. Each team was placed into one of three heats based on their performance over the season and the top five teams in each heat advance to the Southern Section Finals this Saturday. Evan Kidd '11, Charlie Lehman '13, Peter King '12, Kevin Jung '11, Marcus Schmidt '12, Ted Kim '12, and Martin Huerta '11 ran hard, but narrowly missed the fifth spot in their heat, and were unable to advance. One bit of good news though was that Evan Kidd finished 8th (17:10) and was able to qualify as an individual! The boys had a great season taking 2nd in the Condor League and they should be very proud of their accomplishments this year. Selena Wrightson '13, Phoebe Stokes '12, Mara Gabriel '11, Chelsea Young '13, Kaya Lindsay '11, Ruby Goldberg '11, and Meghan Brown '11, ran a great race and finished fourth in their heat qualifying them for this week's race at Mt. SAC and a shot for the State Championships in Fresno the following weekend. Only one team from Midland has accomplished this before and this year's team is the first girls team from Midland to advance this far in ANY sport. Good luck to the Midland Girls team and Evan this weekend!
