MIDLAND MINUTES
  • Camping at Joshua Tree:  Last weekend, sixteen members of the Cross Country team and the Outdoor Leadership program along with faculty members Derek Harwell, Cory Cramer, Don Redl, Jill Redl and Johnny Ninos camped at Joshua Tree National Park for three nights. Highlights included a 6.2 mile run in the desert (originally planned for 3 miles, but they took a wrong turn), a serious scramble through the Chasm of Doom--a tunnel and cave system through a mountain, trail restoration with the park's trail crew in the Cholla Garden and White Tank Campground, a nighttime game of Bocce Ball using lighted balls, and a morning run up Ryan Mountain (1,000 foot elevation gain in two miles) for the Cross Country runners while the Outdoor Leaders scrambled on rocks near the mountain.  The Cross Country team used the trip to prepare for their races in the State Prelims this Saturday while the trip was the culmination of the season for the Outdoor Leaders.  The Cross Country was very appreciative of all the work the Outdoor Leaders, Derek Harwell, and Cory Cramer put into the planning of the trip.

  • Student Fundraising for International Aid: Several Midland students raised $2,000.00 and donated the money in late October to the non-profit organizations One Million Ways and Expanding Opportunities in support of This is a desk fundraiser. The proceeds will directly benefit the students at the Joseph Waweru Home School in Kenya.

  • Say Cheese:  Faculty member Roddy Taylor, along with freshmen Omavi Qadir and David Salehpour, made cheese during Half Holiday on Thursday. "Just a simple sweet ricotta," said Roddy.

  • Board of Trustees Fall Meeting:  Midland's Board of Trustees convene this weekend for the Fall Board Meeting. There are 3 Board meetings throughout the year.

  • Visiting Fillies: The horse program has four visiting horses who arrived at Midland on Monday, November 8th.  These four fillies are young and untrained - they'll be with us for the Winter Sports Season. They are friendly and curious, but unreliable.  Kevin Jung '11, Meghan Brown '11, Ruby Goldberg '11 and Gabriela Rocco '14 are our first "Foal Training Class" students!

A reminder to all: PLEASE do not enter the barn paddock.  No feeding of carrots or apples or other fun treats to the fillies.

  • Quivira Coalition Conference: Mariah Chen '11 won a scholarship for herself and an adult to attend a conference on carbon sequestration using proper grazing practices. Mariah and faculty member Katie Isaacson are attending the conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, November 11-12.

Cross Country: Tomorrow, both the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams will be competing in the Southern Section Prelims at Mt. SAC.  The girls team is currently ranked 11th in the section and the boys are returning for their fifth straight year.  Both teams are racing for the top five in their heats in order to qualify for the Southern Section Finals the following weekend.  Good luck to the runners!
