MIDLAND MINUTES
  • Scary Stories: The student-run Library Advisory Board hosted its second annual Scary Stories at Tea Time in the library last Friday evening. During their regular Tuesday afternoon meeting, LAB students decorated the library with bats, ghosts, and skeletons and made cookies in the shapes of candy corn, witches hats and broomsticks. The library display shelves and bulletin board were made up in new and classic horror books and stories. On Friday night students made ghoul punch and set up the library for storytelling, complete with creepy candelabra and dry ice. Stories ranged from J.T. Hutt's '11 adaptation of The Skeleton Woman to Mara Gabriel's '11 rendition of Annabel Lee, and ending with Meghan Brown's '11 reading of Good Night Goon, sending us all off to our beds for a restful sleep.

  • Dia de Los Muertos:  In Spanish 1 and 3, students researched what "Dia de los Muertos" represents and the rituals around the day. It's a celebration of life and death, and students generated vocabulary and language around the spirit if the day in preparation for writing poems and dedications to people who have passed away. As part of the lesson, students wrote poems in English and in Spanish which were displayed on an altar that Jose Juan Ibarra '87 put up in the Library. Savannah Bryant's '12 family made some sugar skulls and donated them to the altar.

Also in the spirit of the "Dia de los Muertos" celebration, the Art Department, Faith Nygren, Ashleigh Ninos and Johnny Ninos also worked on a skull making project with Spanish 1 students. Students were instructed in working with clay and were given the support necessary for creating a skull, which will be fired and shown during the Thanksgiving art exhibit.

  • Marine Biology and Statistics Field Trip:  On Tuesday, November 2nd, Jeff and Lise Goddard and Don Redl took the Marine Biology and Statistics students (11 seniors and juniors) to Gaviota Beach to sample and analyze data they collected in the field.  Students counted and measured mole crabs from quadrats along a 100 meter transect line, and will use their data to estimate population size of mole crabs on the beach.  Estimating population sizes from samples is a useful technique with many applications in the real world, and will employ statistical techniques the students are learning in class.  Tuesday turned out to be an unseasonably warm, beautiful day at the beach.

  • First Trail Ride of the Season: The Fall Horse Class ventured out on its first "official" trail ride this past week.  Will and Marguerite Graham gathered up their two horses, Bear and Marco, and accompanied the riders around Green Gate Loop.  Mr. Graham exclaimed atop Bradley Mesa, "THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!"  Was it the crisp fall air and puffy white clouds after a day of brisk rain?  Was it the happy company of the all-too-goofy horse class?  Was it just being with his dear and beloved horse?  Who knows, but we're certainly excited that Mr. Graham finds and appreciates the simple pleasures in life!

Cross Country: On Wednesday, the Cross Country team ran in the Condor League Final at Ojai Valley School.  OVS has the toughest course in the league, and it was made even harder with temperatures at 95 degrees for the start of the race.

For the boys, Evan Kidd '11 and Peter King '12 earned medals by placing in the top ten, 4th overall and 9th overall, respectively.  Charlie Lehman '13, Kevin Jung '11, and Marcus Schmidt '12 all finished in the top 20 and helped to narrowly beat Cate to earn 2nd place in the league.  The boys are looking forward to their fifth straight trip to the State Prelims on November 13th.

Selena Wrightson '13 and Phoebe Stokes '12 earned medals for the girls by placing 8th overall and 9th overall, respectively.  This was the best showing the girls have ever had in the league final--Chelsea Young '13, Mara Gabriel '11, and Ruby Goldberg '11 all finished in the top 21, and the team took 3rd place in the league.  The girls are now ranked 11th in the Southern Section and they are looking forward to their second straight trip to Mt. SAC and the first as a ranked team.  Congratulations!
