- Guest Speaker: Upon everyone's return on Sunday October 24th, Jim Goldberg, father of Ruby '11, gave a spellbinding visual presentation and talk about his work of the last 30 plus years. One of the leading innovative social documentarians of our time, Jim talked of his early work exploring American myths about class, power, and happiness through experimental storytelling and combining image and text with "Rich and Poor", (1977-85). He then discussed his next in-depth project, "Raised by Wolves" (1985-95), in which he worked closely with and documented runaway teenagers in San Francisco and Los Angeles to create a book and exhibition that combined original photographs, text, home movie stills, snapshots, drawings, diary entries as well as single and multi-channel video, sculpture, found objects, light boxes and other 3-D elements. He then shared with Midland his most recently exhibited body of work, "Open See" (2003-2008), which was honored with the Henri Cartier-Bresson award in 2007, and he has been touring internationally ever since. Jim held forth for over an hour--and you could have heard a pin drop the whole time, the students were so absorbed--and his presentation was followed by a dynamic question and answer session that lasted another half hour. A wonderful thought-provoking, entertaining as well as educational, way to welcome the students back to school!

- Outdoor Leadership: The outdoor leadership crew is preparing for its joint trip with the top Cross Country runners to Joshua Tree National Park. The crew spent the day working on critical balance exercises, including slack-lining, rope games and stretching. The group will leave next Saturday (Nov. 6th) and spend three days in the high desert. Outdoor leadership will focus on hiking, bouldering and trail work while the runners will train for the CA state championships with some long runs.
- Horsemanship Safety Association (HSA) certifies horseback riding instructors in safe teaching techniques and safety awareness. Donna Maye West has been a clinician with HSA for 24 years, and has worked in the horse industry for over 40 years. Donna spent two days at Midland, going over the horse program with a fine-toothed comb and evaluating Celeste Carlisle and Gillian Kinnear's '04 instructing techniques. Celeste and Gillian are now Certified Instructors through HSA!
Celeste shared, "As a side note, Donna is a HUGE fan of Max, calling him 'wonderful' and 'a very dear schooling horse.' Way to go, Max! (She liked all of the other horses, too. But who can resist Max?)"
