- DMV ID for Students: October break is a good time to visit the DMV for the required official Photo ID for students. Several students did not arrive in September with this important ID and are now unable to book AMTRAK reservations for school breaks. AMTRAK requires an official photo ID and some airlines need a photo ID as well. Please make sure your child has this ID in time for the next school break.
- Northern California Students: Important travel information for return from break.
If you are traveling on AMTRAK, you must take the AMTRAK bus #4784. The train connection does not arrive until after 6:00 PM. Students are required to be back on campus in time for the 6:00 PM Assembly. There will be a chapel and a guest speaker on October 24, 2010 upon the return from break. Late arrival is not an acceptable option. - Geology Class Trip to the Eastern Sierras: Laurie Munger and Derek Harwell '88 took the students in Geology on a car camping trip, taking in the geology along the way to the Owens Valley, Mono lake, and Devils Postpile.
- Water Testing: On Friday night, October 8, chemistry students camped along the Alamo Pintado on Midland's property to sample an upstream site, returning in time for Saturday morning classes.
- Garden Plots: Students in Midland 102 have been planting their garden plots.
- Oil Spill Talk at UCSB: On Tuesday, October 12, Lise Goddard took Marine Biology students Mariah Chen '11, Sarah Haynor '11, Riley Martin '11, and Eliad Becker '11, along with Charlie Lehman '13, Miles Dakin '13, Savannah Bryant '12, and exchange student Sophia from Mascota (whom Savannah is hosting) to a talk at UCSB hosted by the Environmental Studies Department. Dr. Riki Ott, marine toxicologist, spoke about her work to uncover the true ecological and human health costs associated with the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 and the BP Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010. Dr. Riki Ott's life's work was defined when she, with a Ph.D. and working among fisherman in Prince William Sound, Alaska, was called in as a front line witness to the Exxon Valdez spill. Flying over the spill in a helicopter as the spill was unfolding before her eyes, she said to herself, "I know enough to do something about this. The question is, do I care enough to do something about this?" Dr. Riki Ott has spent every moment of her life since then caring deeply and uncovering the truth. Her talk, rooted in science and community activism, was compelling and inspiring.
- Los Olivos Traffic Jam: You never know what you might encounter while driving on Figueroa Mountain Road. This past week, our neighbors at the Chamberlin Ranch were moving a herd of cattle.
- Equestrian Program: View some photos of the Fall riders.
- LA Gatherings: See photos of the Midland gatherings in Santa Monica and Pasadena.
- Bioneers Conference: Faculty members Lise Goddard and Derek Harwell '88, along with students Mariah Chen '11 and Shayla Gordon '12 (who applied for and were awarded youth scholarships) will attend the Bioneers Conference at the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, CA this weekend, October 15-17.
- A Dog's Life at Midland: Students in Don Redl's Statistics class used GPS tracking devices to track the paths of 5 Midland dogs. Very impressive and hilarious!
