MIDLAND MINUTES
  • Midland's Sixth Annual Round-Up: This past weekend was a time to come together, meet new families and friends, eat delicious food from our garden and beyond, see Midland athletes, work side-by-side, and dance together. See highlights.

  • International Aid Fundraising: In 2008, Silviano Valdez '09 and Kevin Jung '11 started the "100% student-based organized fundraising group" with the intention of making fundraising a student tradition at Midland.

  • Common Ground Service Club: This year, several students, with the assistance of Health Director Donna Williams, formed the Common Ground Service Club which was introduced during the evening assembly at Round-Up.

  • LA Gatherings for Alumni, Parents and Friends: On Thursday, an enjoyable Midland gathering was held in Santa Monica - see photos.  Tonight, a gathering will be held in Pasadena.

  • Would You Like to be a Host Family?  We are seeking families of juniors and seniors to host students from Mascota, Mexico in October. See the letter from Jose Juan Ibarra '87.

  • 10-10-10 Global Work Party: At this Sunday's assembly before work period, Midland will celebrate 350.org's Global Work Party and Day of Climate Awareness. Midland's Global Work Party and "Action" will be a photo taken of the entire school in front of the solar arrays by the library. We'll send the Midland photo to the 350.org website.
  • Athletics:  See Midland's sports section online for a full schedule and updated photographs.
Girls' Volleyball: Both JV and Varsity won their games against OVS at home on Saturday during Round-Up!! JV and Varsity played well but lost to Cate on Wednesday.
Cross Country: Midland hosted over 180 runners from the Condor League in a meet last Wednesday.  Evan Kidd '11 ran his first race this year and finished 5th in the league with a time of 17:19.  Charlie Lehman '13 was right behind him in 6th place with a time of 17:37.  The other top five runners were Kevin Jung '11 (18:03), Peter King '12 (18:21) and Marcus Schmidt '12 (18:26).  The boys decisively took back the second place position from Cate and hope to repeat their accomplishment last year by holding onto the second place spot in the final meet in November.
The girls team has practically wrapped up the third place position in the league and a trip to the State Prelims with a solid victory against Dunn.  Selena Wrightson '13 finished in the top spot (10th in the league) in a time of 21:28.  Phoebe Stokes '12 finished right behind her in 11th place with a time of 21:30.  Mara Gabriel '11 (22:28), Chelsea Young '13 (22:48) and Meghan Brown '11 (23:23) were the remaining top five runners in a team that is the best we've seen in at least ten years!  Congratulations to all of the runners.
