MIDLAND MINUTES
  • Junior Dance Weekend:  The juniors planned a fantastic and successful weekend.  See photos.

  • Family School to Lunch: See photos of Midland students hosting Family School students for pizza in the garden.

  • Conservation Easement Celebration: On Saturday, Midland hosted a wonderful event to celebrate the Conservation Easement secured in 2009 with The Trust for Public Land and the Santa Barbara Land Trust.

  • Art Show: Several Midland students have their artwork on display at San Roque School in Santa Barbara this month. The art show is located at the Upper Campus located at 2300 Garden Street. The artwork is on display until May 28.

  • Senior Lunch: On Sunday, the Class of 2010 enjoyed lunch at the local Los Olivos Cafe with Board members and were welcomed as Midland alumni/ae by Alumni President John Martin '66.

  • Cross-Cut Saw Workshop: On Sunday, John Glenn from the Sierra National Forest held a cross-cut saw workshop at Midland. The fire crew was required to participate in the training in order to help John in clearing trails in the Ansel Adams Wilderness in September.  Fire crew members are freshmen Kirby Kersels, Miguel Provencio, Weiler Shafer, and Miles Dakin. John taught the crew the difference between several cross-cut saws, safety while sawing, and care of the cross-cut saws.  See photos in the Junior Dance Weekend online album.

  • College Counseling Updates: Lynda Cummings has posted new information and updates on the College Counseling web page.

  • Triathlon: On Wednesday, Don Redl organized the 6th Annual  Midland Triathlon. 14 teams comprised of students and faculty competed. The course consists of swimming six laps in the Reservoir, a 4.5-mile bike ride and a 2-mile run. The first place team was Beau Lino '10 (swim), Chris Rea (bike) and Peter King '12 (run).
Records were broken in two events: Swimming-Laurie Munger and Running-Evan Kidd.  While many of the teams were shooting for first place, some were more interested in style.  Team Peru, captained by faculty member Paul Gelles, dressed up in mixture of Incan and modern Peruvian outfits and three Chinese students formed Team Made in China. The youngest member of the community to compete this year was Elias Svennungsen who took 10th place in the bike race despite crashing early in the race.  A special mention also goes to Kirby Kersels '13, who was the only participant to compete in all three events.

  • Lacrosse: Congratulations to both the Boys' and Girls' teams on winning their final games against Thacher on Saturday!

  • IMPORTANT NOTE about packing for Midland Departure: During the final week of school, students have several sessions in which they work on getting their cabins ready for summer.  Weeds are pulled around the borders for fire safety.  Dumpsters are onsite for disposal of unusable items. Seniors sell items to underclassmen, and useful, but unused items are donated to "People Helping People", a local thrift shop.
Students have many opportunities to be well organized for a quick departure by the time graduation arrives. On graduation morning, the whole Midland community packs. Teams move large items: bureaus, desks, lamps, bicycles, etc. into assigned storage cabins. About 10:30 AM students and faculty head for the showers to get ready for graduation at noon. It would be chaotic to have cars and parents in the living areas with all this activity, so we ask that NO ONE comes into the cabin areas until after graduation.
Graduation ends promptly at 1:00 PM and pizza is served to fortify everyone for loading their cars for the summer break. This is the only time cars are allowed in the living yards. Students must take all soft items home: clothes, towels, and bedding. Otherwise, the mice will destroy them. Books and school supplies may be stored in the bureau drawers and any other rodent proof items may be stored at Midland for the summer.
We look forward to greeting parents and visitors around 11:00 AM on Graduation Day when the dust from the final packing session has been hosed down the drain and Midlanders are ready to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2010.
