Junior Dance Weekend: The juniors have planned a fun-filled weekend including a pizza night, a masquerade dance, face painting, water fights, a movie night and other all-school games for this weekend.
- One-Woman Show: As part of her senior thesis,
Miranda Poett performed the one-woman show Shakespeare with my
Father, written by the late Lynn Redgrave.
- Art Show: Several Midland students have their artwork on display at San Roque School in Santa Barbara this month. The art show is located at the Upper Campus located at 2300 Garden Street. The artwork is on display until May 28.
- Ojai Valley Visitors: Last weekend, Ben Munger '79 hosted students from Ojai Valley School's Lower Campus. The 7th and 8th graders hiked from Matilija
Creek in Ojai to Midland over 8 days arriving on Saturday, the 8th of
May. The trip was led by Matt Inman who said they walked almost 100
miles because of backtracking in some of the areas where there were no
trails. Their trip was inspired by seeing Midland students and faculty members hike to Thacher School in Ojai, but the OVS group pioneered a new route
that could be copied by Midland in the future. Congratulations OVS! As
the group was hiking on their first day, they ran into Peter Woodworth
and John Gaddis, both Class of 1966 at Midland.
- Condor League Meeting: On Monday evening, Will Graham and Tom Rogowski attended the Condor League's meeting for Heads of School and Athletic Directors in Ojai.
- Valley Racers: Don Redl, Jill Redl, and Martina Svennungsen all
participated in the Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon recently, which takes place here in the
Santa Ynez Valley. Don and Martina both took 3rd in their age groups.
Martina set her PR this year, running a
1:37.59. Jill beat her course PR by over 10 minutes, making her the
true star of the show, and finished 12th in her age group, with a time
of 1:44.34. Congratulations runners!
- Young Aviators: On Saturday morning, Brian Bang '11 and Ziggy and Will Goddard
enjoyed flights in small airplanes with local pilots Eric Cobb (the
pilot who buzzed Midland students on Grass Mountain Day) and Stanley
Peternel in the Young Eagles Program at the Santa Ynez Airport. This
program pairs young pilots, ages 8-18, with experienced pilots to
promote interest in aviation.
Sage Hens: This week, Martina
Svennungsen attended the Santa Barbara Sage Hens spring ride, a
week-long annual camping trip held this year at Rancho San Fernando Rey,
along the Santa Ynez River. The Sage Hens group is a longtime women's
riding association that gathers twice a year. The days are spent riding
on gorgeous trails and participating in casual riding games back at
camp. This year, Midland's neighbors Christine O'Keefe and Sarah
Chamberlin sponsored Martina's attendance, an honor that is extended to
guests who may eventually be eligible for membership in the future. On
Wednesday, Martina visited with longtime Midlander, Jean Schuyler, a
40-year Sage Hen member, who made an appearance for a special lunch.
- Athletics:
On Monday, JV boys and girls played "Lacrosse Baseball" - a hybrid version of both sports that resulted in a really fun game. Lacrosse: On Tuesday, the boys played Dunn and won in the Midland/Dunn rivalry for the "ax" so it remains on
the wall in the Head of School's office at Midland! The score was 8-1. Evan Kidd '12 has only allowed 1 goal in 3 games. Riley Martin '11 and Shue Him Lau '11 lead the scoring efforts, while Martin Huerta '11 adds strength in the mid-field. The record stands at 5-4, after starting the season 1-4, as they've won the last 4 games! Final games are tomorrow vs. Thacher.
