MIDLAND MINUTES
  • Alumni, Parents & Friends Weekend is this weekend! See the schedule.

  • Memoir Projects will be on display this weekend. For the past seven weeks, World Studies students have been taking a close look into their own lives and creating a series of memoirs about themselves.  The final project is a book or some type of artistic compilation of the memoirs that somehow represents the stories within.  This year, projects consist of a camping profile, stereo system with speakers, tombstone, and a magazine, just to name a few.  Students can be proud of the hard work that went into their final products.

  • Spring Theater Production: Midland's spring theater production of Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Wit, will be presented in the amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. on April 24th, as part of Alumni, Parents & Friends Weekend, and again on Saturday, May 1st, at 8 p.m.  Audience members are advised to dress warmly.  The play, which runs for about ninety minutes without intermission, contains mature themes and language and may not be suitable for children.  Child-care will be provided on the 24th for families who would like to attend the show without their children.

  • Senior Thesis Symposium: On Wednesday, the seniors presented their thesis projects to the community. They worked hard, and the work paid off as the presentations made us proud of them and what we do here. See highlights and a list of the thesis topics.

  • Midland's Booth at SB Earth Day Festival: On Sunday, students in Lise Goddard's Chemistry class presented various solar, hydrogen fuel cell and sustainability projects they made in class to attendees at Santa Barbara's Earth Day Festival.

  • Freshman Garden Plots: Students in Midland 102 have had exposure to the garden and the success of their vegetables has been phenomenal. There is something to say for adding a little more compost and double-digging. Read more.

  • Thoroughbred Farm: On Saturday afternoon, Martina Svennungsen and Gillian Kinnear '04 took the spring riding group to Trustee Nick Alexander's ('60) Thoroughbred breeding farm in the Santa Ynez Valley. Students were allowed to schmooze with the mamas and babies alike--11 total thus far, with a few more on the way.  Nick toured students through his beautiful facility, sharing over 25 years of adventures of his horse racing experiences.  Nick also told the group that his love of horses began and grew during his time as a Midland student. Students truly enjoyed Nick's great stories and his gorgeous horses, and the program thanks him for opening his farm to us.

  • Support Midland's First Yearbook: This student led project will be hardcover, printed on 30% PCW recycled paper, 80 pages, and created using InDesign CS4.  Please help support the yearbook by purchasing an advertisement for your business that will be a part of the book. Ads/messages can be business card sized to full page sized; please view the advertising form for sizing prices.  Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of time before the yearbook is supposed to go off to printing, so please e-mail Mariah Chen '11 ASAP regarding any interest or questions. Mariah would be happy to work with you; all you need to do is provide a direction.  Thanks for your consideration.

  • Hard Luck Camping Trip: Rob Hopkinson took the outdoor leadership students hard-luck camping at the Rez in the rain this week...Midlanders camp, rain or shine!

  • Junior State of America (JSA) Conference: Midland students Eliad Becker '11, Erin Tyler-Williams '12, Chelsea Young '13 and Pebbles Gonzalez '13 went to the JSA's Southern California Spring State Convention with faculty member Sarah Campbell in Los Angeles. Eliad said, "We had a blast, and there was a special group, CA Youth Summit, in which 2 Midland students participated. It was a great opportunity to interact with other high school students and get involved in politics."

  • UCSB Panel on Sustainability: On Saturday morning, Mr. Graham will be a panel member for a session entitled "What does a sustainable world look like?" at UCSB's Environmental Studies Program's 40th Anniversary Celebration.

  • Water in the West Trip: Students in Laurie Munger's Water in the West class have been studying the "pipes" of the Central Valley Project (Federal, run by the Bureau of Reclamation) and the State Water Project (run by the California Department of Water Resources). Laurie said, "I wanted William (Johnston-Carter '10), Brian (Bang '12), Kirby (Kersels '13), and Miles (Dakin '13) to see where all this diverted water travels through the Central Valley. We looked at a lot of canals, aqueducts, dams, and ditches, as well as the completely cultivated old Tulare Lake bed (30 mile by 30 mile FLAT, dried-up lake Pleistocene lake bed planted with a lot of cotton and wheat).  We also were given tours of the Friant Dam on the San Joaquin River, above Fresno, and the Kern County Water Bank, east of Bakersfield. Friant Dam was releasing water into the San Joaquin River bed in compliance with a court settlement to release in-stream flows for environmental restoration. The river has not flowed for 50 years, due to the construction of the dam, so watching water actually flow down the San Joaquin was pretty exciting. The boys took multiple plunges into the 50 degree water of the Tule River, while staying at our house in the Sierra's. Brian slept more than any teenager I've ever seen, and Miles is officially afraid of mice crawling in the walls of our bunk house (now ready for eager Midland students to spend the night in)."

  • Piano for Sale: Kay Rich's piano, a  Henry F. Miller upright, is for sale. The Svennungsens bought it from a faculty member in 2000, and are offering it for $500.  Please email Martina with questions.

  • Athletics:
Lacrosse: Midland boys lost to Laguna on Wednesday and girls lost to Dunn. Lacrosse games are at home tomorrow vs. OVS starting at 2 PM on Kimpton Field.
Equestrian: Be sure to see the Equestrian Drill performance this weekend on Saturday at 4 PM.

  • Admissions: We had a great first round in Admissions for the new students in 2010. In this economic climate, we need to continue to spread the word. Please connect great families with Midland! Thank you.
