MIDLAND MINUTES
  • Spring Theater Production: Midland's spring theater production of Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Wit, will be presented in the amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. on April 24th, as part of Alumni, Parents & Friends Weekend, and again on Saturday, May 1st, at 8 p.m.  Audience members are advised to dress warmly.  The play, which runs for about ninety minutes without intermission, contains mature themes and language and may not be suitable for children.  Child-care will be provided on the 24th for families who would like to attend the show without their children.

  • Mason Willrich '50 Lecture on Environmental Issues: On Sunday evening, Dr. Robert Wilkinson, Lecturer, Environmental Studies, and Adjunct Associate Professor, Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara, gave Midland School's Tenth Annual Mason Willrich '50 Lecture on Environmental Issues entitled "Water, Energy, and Climate: Integrated Strategies to Build Resilience."

  • Current Parent Shares Photographic Artwork: On Monday, photographic artist Jim Goldberg (parent of Ruby '11) presented a brief overview of his collections to the World Studies class.  Early in his career, Jim developed a form of photography where he combined images and texts, often written by his subjects, as witness to peoples' stories.  His more recent work focuses on immigrants, refugees, and slavery in different parts of the world.  This is the second time Jim has shared his talents with Midland students, and each time, the students have been enthralled by his work, which helps make the issues students in World Studies are learning about real, and offers a model for how to engage with and impact the world.

  • Lacrosse Reunion: Over break, Mr. Graham returned to New England to play lacrosse in a game between Middlebury College alumni and Bowdoin College alumni...most players were former All Americans.

  • Spring Horseback Ride: On Saturday, April 3rd, Derek and Martina Svennungsen hosted a Spring Ride on Midland's property for the larger Valley community. Working their way through the foggy hills, about 40 riders climbed up and around Sycamore Ridge, behind the antenna, dropped down the windy trail into Maple Creek, and back up along Tank Mesa ending at the horse trailers just as the sun poked through to greet everyone for a social picnic gathering.  It was a perfect day for good times, great company, and beautiful vistas on Midland's glorious, green trails.  Watch a short and fun video of the ride.

  • The Physics of Instruments: Students in Chris Rea's Physics class made instruments and then gave presentations that included the challenges they faced while constructing their instruments, followed by live performances.

  • Midland Art Students Featured: Read the Center for Ecoliteracy/Etsy blog featuring Midland art students.

  • Wallet Recovery: John Swain '87, alumnus, faculty brat, and teacher at Cate School returned a wallet left at a Cate lacrosse game. John had the time to ride the wallet up on his Harley Davidson on Thursday morning after the game.  Ben Munger is grateful for the recovery of the wallet!

Ads/messages can be business card sized to full page sized; please view the advertising form for sizing prices.  Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of time before the yearbook is supposed to go off to printing, so please e-mail Mariah Chen '11 ASAP regarding any interest or questions. Mariah would be happy to work with you; all you need to do is provide a direction.  Thanks for your consideration.

  • Juniors Learn Admissions Process: On Tuesday evening, juniors met with reps from Pitzer College, Scripps College, St. Mary's of CA, George Washington University, and Whitman College. They participated in a case-study and mock-application evening. They learned how to admit, deny and wait-list students. It was a great opportunity to discuss with the reps, and good experience to learn what colleges are looking for.

  • Cowboy Academy: Last week, Equestrian Program Director Martina Svennungsen was invited to be a volunteer wrangler at the 2010 Cowboy Academy at the V6 Ranch in Parkfield, California.  Sponsored by the Arabian Horse Association, Martina and two other local cowgirls worked alongside Sheila Varian, internationally known horsewoman, breeder, trainer, and owner of Varian Arabians.  Her wrangling duties included feeding, grooming, and tacking the ranch horses in preparation for the daily rides, as well as offering riding support out on the trails and during cattle work. Upon her return, Martina stated that "Working together with Sheila was absolutely exhilarating, and while my role was to provide minor instruction, I felt I learned as much as the academy participants. It truly was an honor to be asked to join the event."
