MIDLAND MINUTES
  • US Census Help:  Many parents have been asking if they claim their children on the US Census when they are at Midland. The answer is that students at boarding schools are counted by the school.

  • Hard Luck Camping Trip: On Saturday night, Hye-Min Lee '10, Kirby Kersels '13, Chelsea Young '13 and Peter Coonradt '64 joined Will and Marguerite Graham on an overnight hard luck camping trip.overnight hard luck camping trip.

  • Geology Trip: Laurie Munger took her geology class camping at Midland's property on the Manzana. They were looking at the Manzana Creek's drainage pattern and having a good time crossing the creek 28 times.  Seniors Heather, Libang, and Zhi went.

  • Socratic Seminar: Last Thursday, World Studies students participated in a Socratic Seminar which discussed the issue of "why geopolitics trumps genocide," specifically in reference to the major genocides of the 20th century and the current situation in Sudan.  The sophomores brought energy, thorough knowledge, and compelling evidence to support their arguments.  In conclusion to the seminar, students proposed solutions to this issue to help prevent future genocides from occurring.  Well done, World Studies!

  • Fox Hunt: On Saturday afternoon, Martina Svennungsen took student riders Miranda Poett '10, Libang Shi '10, and Kevin Jung '11 fox hunting with the local traditional hunt group, The Santa Ynez Valley Hounds.  The hunt proved to be very exciting for the students as the hounds drove out a wild boar in the middle of the ride. To end the fabulous afternoon, Midland students led the first field that follows the huntswoman and her hounds over the hillsides of the land, an unexpected privilege. After the four-hour ride, many group members complimented Midland's riders and their horses, and hoped that they could participate in future outings.

  • Support Midland's First Yearbook: This student led project will be hardcover, printed on 30% PCW recycled paper, 80 pages, and created using InDesign CS4.  Please help support the yearbook by purchasing an advertisement for your business that will be a part of the book. Ads/messages can be business card sized to full page sized; please view the advertising form for sizing prices.  Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of time before the yearbook is supposed to go off to printing, so please e-mail Mariah Chen '11 ASAP regarding any interest or questions.  Mariah would be happy to work with you; all you need to do is provide a direction.  Thanks for your consideration.

  • Water Education Conference: This past week, Laurie Munger went to a conference put on by the Water Education Foundation, it was their annual Executive Briefing held in Sacramento.  Many stakeholders in the Cailfornia water world attended: Bureau of Reclamation, Department of Water Resources, agricultural and municipal water agencies and districts, water policy advisors, lawyers for the Environmental Defense Fund, representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Interior for California and Nevada, etc.  The topics of discussion included new legislation to reduce the State's annual consumption of water by 20% by 2020, new groundwater monitoring policies, making the Delta work for all concerned (residents, agriculture, and urban users), the $11 billion bond issue for water issues on the November ballot, urban conservation mandates, and the state of the Colorado River water transfers between the Imperial Valley Irrigation District and San Diego municipal users.

  • Ping Pong Tourney: On Sunday, March 21st, Midland faculty members Paul Gelles, Ian Cummings, Ben Munger '79, BG Kresse '68, and faculty spouse and Ping Pong Czar John Nygren led a contingent of 18 Midland students to play Dunn at both the singles and doubles level. The day was filled with intense play, good food, and a lot of commingling with our Dunn counterparts, which made for a special event. While Midland did not ultimately prevail, several individuals and doubles teams did quite well.  Indeed, while Midland may not have an underground ping pong bunker, an expensive machine that spits out balls at two per second, nor consider ping pong a full time sport as does Dunn, the Midland players held their own!
