  • The Freshmen Pinhole Camera Project is featured on Admissions Quest.

  • Fifth Annual Stock Market Competition: This spring, 36 students and faculty are competing in the fifth annual stock market competition led by Don Redl. Each competitor starts with $1,000,000 in cash to invest in stocks and options. Students are learning how to trade stocks short or long and how to conduct limit and stop-loss orders using an online simulator through the Investopedia.com website. The goal of the game is to develop an understanding of investing principles and to cultivate an awareness of how current events impact the financial system. The competition will continue until May 22nd. Good luck to all participants!

  • Visionary Speaker at UCSB: Today, March 5, Lise Goddard will take Mariah Chen '11, Kirby Kersels '13, and Miles Dakin '13 to hear environmental visionary Amory Lovins of the Rocky Mountain Institute speak at UCSB.

  • Mardi Gras Dance at The Anacapa School: Last Friday night, 16 Midland students and faculty members Donna Williams and Sarah Campbell went to a Mardi Gras dance at The Anacapa School. There was lots of dancing and colorful beads. They also had a casino night going on.

  • Green Cup Challenge: Midland is competing in the Green Cup Challenge, a nation-wide contest for the month of February to conserve energy. Over 200 schools are participating this year. An optional part of the event is submit a student-made video about conservation at your school. Mariah Chen '11 took on the challenge and spent a few hours making a 2-minute video that captures Midland's environmental ethic and spirit extremely well.

  • Lise Goddard to Speak at Conference: Lise Goddard will be presenting at the CAIS Southern Regional meeting this Monday, March 8 at Campbell Hall School in North Hollywood. Lise will talk about "Lessons Learned from 8 Decades of Simple Living" at Midland.

  • Music in the Library: On Sunday, singer-songwriter and guitarist Owen Plant and bassist Mike Sugar of the group, The Sunshine Brothers, played for two hours in the Library for Midland students and faculty. Ranging from reggae- and rock-inflected songs to songs in a more pop-ish vein, the two musicians entertained a small but enthusiastic crowd. Owen's versatile vocal delivery and thoughtful lyrics had more and more students coming through the door as their set went on--a good time was had by all!

  • Midland Open House: Please help spread the word to local prospective families about our upcoming Open House on Saturday, March 13, 2010.

  • Art at Whitney Museum of American Art: Martin Kersels (current parent to Kirby '13) has his art on display at the Whitney Biennial in New York City. Congratulations!

  • Tax Help: This year, six students, Heather Waldroup '10, Wesley Harting '11, Kevin Jung '11, Daniel Nimmo '11, Miles Dakin '13 and Kirby Kersels '13, have completed their certification through the IRS to prepare taxes for low-income families through the VITA program.  The students have already volunteered on two separate occasions and they have helped local families to receive refunds totaling over $30,000 by taking advantage of the Earned Income, Making Work Pay, and Child tax credits.  They will wrap up their work for this tax season on Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

  • Athletics:
    Lacrosse season has started, and the first game is on March 17. Other sports options include the equestrian program, organic gardening, and maintenance.
