- Toads:
Shawn McVicar's Biology classes went to the Res this week to observe the annual convergence of Western Toads (Bufo boreas).
There were several pairs of toads engaged in amplexus, where the smaller
male toad grasps the large female and rides on her back in order to
fertilize her eggs as she releases them into the water. There are always
more males than females, which leads to dramatic fights as the newcomers
try to break up existing pairs. In the coming weeks the edge of the Res will be filled with countless black strings of toad eggs.
