Midland Students Raise Money for Causes
Impressive efforts of compassion and a sense of duty are shown by several Midland students these days. Inspired by their World Studies class taught by Martina Svennungsen and Sarah Campbell, or by a summer job, Midland students have shown that a single student can make a difference.

Alumni/ae News
  • Masha Nebritova '00 works at Shutterstock.com, lives in New York, and graduated from Tel Aviv University with a BA in theater design. Masha says, "I'm a lead activist for the Greenpeace NYC network and I have published two articles in Russian Reporter covering U.S. policies, including the current American Clean Energy and Security Act (a total disaster). I'm studying for a certificate in marketing and journalism at NYU."

  • Liz Stultz '90 has recently moved to Georgia with her family.

  • Kim Grande '92 has a beautiful 1-year old daughter, Adalynn, and is living in Colorado.

  • Shelagh Baird '96 is getting married in July to Dan Simon, a NOAA Corps officer who she met on a fisheries research vessel in the Bering Sea 10 years ago. Shelagh reports, "We live in Charleston, SC, but look forward to returning to Seattle, WA, where we have spent most of the past decade. I still work in international health, focusing on health systems strengthening and HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. Dan continues to do oceanography and climate research. Can't wait to see a bunch of Midland faces at our wedding!"

  • Isaiah Chase '98 is very happy in medical school. He's a 3rd year student at the University of Rochester, doing rotations and figuring out his field of choice towards residency.

  • Dan Sakols '81 shares "the kids are growing, and I'm looking forward to spending a few days back country skiing in Yosemite with Hugh."

  • Chris Dock '84 is a retired Air Force Master Sergeant after 23 years of active duty service.  He now works as a Civil Service Air Force Civilian, supporting the F-22 Raptor at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, AK.  He says, "my brother Craig is retired Air Force as well, living in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. Our sister, Lisa, resides in Las Vegas, NV."

  • Jim Dodds '53 completed his final bicycle tour last September from Prague, Czech Republic, to Krakow, Poland. Sixty-one years of cycling! He started with a ride from Midland to Los Angeles with Mac Jeffrey '53. Jim says, "When we started out from Midland we had no idea as to cycle touring. If any Midland alumni have questions about cycling the world just send me an email: jmdodds@sbcglobal.net."

In Memoriam

Kathy Munger, who was adored and respected by anyone ever associated with Midland School, passed peacefully on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at her home in Inverness, CA. Kathy arrived at Midland in the early 60s with her husband Carl, and they stayed until 1980, after Carl's 10 years of service as Midland's third head of school.

Lorenzo D. Rice, Jr., '80, unexpectedly passed away on January 12, 2010.  Here's the link to his obituary.  A memorial is scheduled at Midland School on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 1 PM.  If you have stories, pictures, or other memories to share, please email Teedo Rice Denison '81.

Bill Kucera '66, passed away on January 24, 2010, at his home in Utah, after a long battle with cancer. Memorial services were held in Utah, and his ashes will be spread near the family home in Santa Barbara sometime in the  Spring.

We recently learned that Ed Searby '53 passed away in 2006. 

Stevens Manning, Jr., '49, passed away on January 13, 2010, at the age of 79, after a long illness. Stevens is remembered for his love of the outdoors and his boundless joy in living every moment of his life to the fullest. A memorial service was held on February 13, 2010, in San Francisco.  Here's the link to his obituary. You can share memories and leave condolences in the online guest book.
