Kathy Munger: We are saddened to report that Kathy Munger passed away on Wednesday at her home in Inverness, CA. Kathy was truly a pillar of the Midland community and we will miss her.
- San Francisco Gathering: Our gathering in San Francisco is tonight. We look forward to seeing many of you.
- Relief for Haiti: The Santa Ynez Valley Journal featured an article on Kevin Jung '11.
- Animation Short: Midland Senior Kyle Hong recently completed a fascinating 45-second piece of (silent) animation that Phil Hasseljian uploaded to YouTube.
- Fundraising for Tibetan Children: Seniors Yuchen Zhao and Inochi Fukui are working to raise funds to support a preschool for children of Tibetan refugee families who live in poverty in
Katmandu, Nepal. Yuchen worked with these children last summer and has direct
contact with the coordinator of the project. Yuchen and Inochi used the
Graham's kitchen and dining area to cook and serve a
traditional Chinese dinner--inviting members of the community to
consider making a donation in exchange for dinner and a movie on a half
holiday evening. Selena Wrightson '13 served as a prep-cook for the two. To date, they have raised $310.00.
- Work Period Extends to Extended Family: Miguel Provencio's '13 grandparents spent the day at Midland this past Sunday. Dave Bratz, Miguel's grandfather and an electrical engineer, volunteered to rewire the Lumberyard.
- Signs of Spring: Weeds are back--signs of spring as the campus "greens" from the rains. Students have been clearing growth away from buildings. Tavita Mafi '12 fought back the lush brush with his own energy saving non-polluting weed whacker.
- Athletics:
Soccer: Playing without five starters and with no substitutes, the Boys' Varsity soccer team made a great effort at Laguna Blanca last Friday,
trailing only 1-0 at halftime before falling, 6-0. Jack Marcus
'12 performed valiantly as the emergency goalkeeper, and Charlie Lehman
'13 helped out considerably by skipping a day of JV basketball in order to
fill in at right back. The Oaks finished the season with a record of
1-8-1, 1-7-1 in the Condor League. Basketball: Varsity basketball, playing without any juniors, lost a rematch against
Dunn Monday by 11 points (after beating them by 31 three days
earlier). Sophomores Shane Williams and Kendrick Holmes played strong
games in the losing effort. The season ended on a disappointing note,
as the short-handed Varsity played a lackluster game against Laguna
Blanca. Seniors Gus Dene and Heather Waldroup, in their last Varsity
contests, played with a great deal of spirit to keep the game
entertaining. The Varsity won four games and were close in many of
their losses, so it was a successful season for a team whose starting
lineup averaged 5'7". The JV season ends today against Dunn.

- Experiential Week is next week.
Freshman will be working with the theme "Home: From My Perspective." Each student
will begin the process with guided writing to examine the theme, and
then construct a pinhole camera and document through photos and writing
their interpretation of home. Principles of design and composition,
the scientific concepts associated with photography and darkroom work,
and the history of photography will all be explored. Midland faculty
members have made a large camera obscura camera obscura
in one of the cabins in lower yard to help students more easily see
what will happen inside their own pinhole cameras, which will be constructed
from black foam board, electrical tape and aluminum cans. In addition
to putting together a portfolio of their work, students will have lots
of time to hike on the Midland property, spend time together and get
to better know the Midland faculty working with them for the week: Phil
Hasseljian, Laurie Munger, Faith Nygren, Chris Rea, Don Redl, Jill Redl,
Ashleigh Rosa and Derek Svennungsen. Sophomores are doing an extended backpacking trip in Joshua Tree, and will install a 3-kW grid-tied
photovoltaic array that will help power our well pumps. Juniors are in Mascota, Mexico, for the cultural exchange program. Seniors will explore a personalized
learning experience in an area of interest and to develop a sense of
self reliance beyond the Midland community.
