- MLK Day at Midland: On
Monday, Midland School celebrated and honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with
a series of activities.

- Hike During Lull in Winter Storm: Johnny Ninos and Derek Svennungsen took some students up Birabent Creek during a lull in the rainstorms. Waist-deep in water the color (but not taste!) of chocolate milk, bright and shiny rocks and leaves, and amazingly loud rapids were highlights. William Johnston-Carter '10 found a cave, and thinks he'll stay there for a night during Experiential Week.
- Marine Biology Field Trip: On Sunday, January 10, Lise and Jeff Goddard took the Marine Biology
students for a second spectacular low tide trip to the Ellwood boulder
field in Goleta, CA.
- Stock Market Pros: Last Friday, Libang Shi '10 and Aidan McMurry '12 attended an awards
luncheon in Buellton to honor the best team from each school in a
stock market competition organized by The Rotary Club of the Santa Ynez
Valley. To their surprise, Libang and Aidan were not only the best of
the three teams representing Midland, but they also won the high school
division, beating out both Dunn School and Santa Ynez Valley Union High
School. Congratulations to our two future contributors to the school's
endowment!
- "Schools Going Green" Conference: Tomorrow, Head of School Will Graham and Director of
Environmental Programs Lise Goddard, will present "A Regional Case Study,
Midland School - Evolving a Culture of Sustainability" at the Second Annual "Schools Going Green" Conference hosted by Besant Hill. Heather Waldroup '10, Mariah Chen '11 and Kirby Kersels '13 will also represent Midland at the conference.

- Rainy Day Film: The Library Advisory Board hosted a rainy day short film in the library
on Tuesday afternoon. Students sipped hot cocoa while watching the
muscial tragicomedy Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which was written during the 2007-2008 writers' strike then launched as a 3-part Web series in July of 2008.

- Admissions Update: January is becoming a very busy month for Admissions. Up to 20 families will have visited this month. Keep telling people about Midland! Thank you!
- Athletics:
Soccer: After losing to Thacher, 4-0, at home on Friday, Midland Varsity Boys gave the Toads
all they could handle in a return match at Thacher, falling 2-1 on a
78th-minute breakaway score by Cole Ryder. The Oaks took the early
lead, 1-0, on a 14th-minute strike by John Lee '11, assisted by Estevan
Murillo '12, but gave the goal back just seconds before halftime when a
pass back to goalkeeper Martin Huerta '11 ended up in their own net. Martin registered four saves as Midland limited Thacher to 11 shots. The Oaks fell to 1-6-0, 1-5-0 in the Condor League. Thacher improved
to 4-0-1 in the Condor League. Varsity Girls lost to Thacher 2-0 but played their hearts out against a true varsity team. Our girls were recognized by both officials and the other team for good sportsmanship and for playing hard. Basketball: The team fought hard against Besant Hill, losing 77-52. Ted Kim '12 and Evan Kidd '11 helped keep the game close throughout the third quarter. See the sports schedule and updated sports photos.
