WASC Accreditation

Committee members from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Commission came to Midland's campus this month and met with faculty and students for our next 6-year accreditation. Overall, the visit went well and we will receive their full report in June.

Will New Tax Laws Affect My Estate Plan?  
Taxes

It's an extraordinarily uncertain time - tax  wise, that is. This is the first year in decades that American tax law repealed the federal estate tax. As of Jan. 1, 2010, federal estate taxes are repealed for any deaths that occur during this calendar year, regardless of the size of that person's estate (state estate/inheritance taxes will still apply).

Marine Biology Field Trip: On Sunday, January 10, Lise and Jeff Goddard took the Marine Biology students for a second spectacular low tide trip to the Ellwood boulder field in Goleta, CA. Read More.

Presenters at "Schools Going Green" Conference: On Saturday, January 23, Head of School Will Graham and Director of Environmental Programs Lise Goddard, presented "A Regional Case Study, Midland School - Evolving a Culture of Sustainability" at the Second Annual "Schools Going Green" Conference hosted by Besant Hill. Heather Waldroup '10, Mariah Chen '11 and Kirby Kersels '13 also represented Midland at the conference.

Alumni/ae News
  • Vivian Lee '02 got engaged on Thanksgiving to Tim Lai. They are planning on getting married in the Spring of 2011. Congratulations!

  • Masha Nebritova '00 works at Shutterstock.com, lives in New York, and graduated from Tel Aviv University with a BA in theater design. "I'm a lead activist for the Greenpeace NYC network and I have published two articles in Russian Reporter covering U.S. policies, including the current American Clean Energy and Security Act (a total disaster). Studying for a certificate in marketing and journalism at NYU."

  • Edward Bennett '98 reports, "I'm married to Leah Barnum; we have a kid on the way. I graduated from St. John's College with a BA in philosophy and mathematics, Maryland with an MA in biological anthropology, and am currently enrolled at University of North Carolina here in Chapel Hill where we bought a house."

  • Megan McGrath-Gates '93 gave birth to Benjamin Emilio-Poppie Gates on 12-15-09 at 1:36 am. He weighed 7lbs 2.6 oz, and measured 20 in. Megan reports, "Gorgeous baby. I love him beyond belief! Esron is doing a great job too. Benjamin is nursing beautifully." Congratulations!

  • Ben Anders '87 reports, "After four years of hard work I finally got my CPA license! I'm opening my own tax and accounting business in Sacramento, CA, where I live with my wonderful wife, Shari, and two daughters, Eva - age 8 and Sarah - age 4."

  • Jennifer Nuckton '84 lives in Monterey, CA, recently completed clinical specialist testing and is working in Hippotherapy (physical therapy using a horse for treatment) with pediatrics.

  • Bill Dane '56 has a website where you can view his photography "Volumes."

In Memoriam
Midland is saddened to announce the passing of Stanard Ridgway Funsten, Jr., '43, who passed away peacefully December 2, 2009, at the at age of 84. Please follow this link for his obituary.
