Plants of Midland
|
Midland School is host to an impressive array of native and non-native plants. Thanks to Jeff Goddard, a research biologist affiliated with UCSB's Marine Science Institute, and who also co-teaches Marine Biology at Midland with Lise Goddard, a list of plants at Midland is available. John Malpas '71, has also added Jeff's list of Midland Plants to the Calflora database.

- Frances King '09 on the Inca Trail (in photo above) for Thinking Beyond Borders (TBB), a gap year program she's attending.
- David Simkowitz-Rogers '03 received a degree in Ecological Agriculture and Sustainable
Community in June 2007. After spending the 2009 growing and harvesting
season in Missouri on an organic farm with his partner, David is
looking for work in his field....that's a pun. He plans to spend the
winter in Missoula working and saving money and perhaps work a farm in
Idaho come spring.
- Nick Christianson '99 opened a furniture store, Urban Hardwoods, in San Francisco that sells furniture made from salvaged trees. Before that, he worked in an art gallery in SOHO, New York, selling native art from Alaska.
- Javier Castillo '77 reports, "Every time I read news about Midland School, it brings
back great memories. Back home living a peaceful life with my wife and
daughter here in the state of Utah. Been in the military for quite some
time, had the opportunity to be in many places I had never
thought: Alaska, Washington,Texas, Georgia, Germany, and South Korea
were places that we
trained in."
- David Starkman '68 has been teaching workshops on 3D (stereoscopic) photography.
- "Robert Clifford Hadden '42, my father, attended Midland, as did his younger
brother, Frederick Clifford Hadden '52. My
grandfather, Robert Jones Hadden was a
member of the Board for many years, far past the time his children attended. I have heard so many stories of days at the school. I remember my father talking about three walled
classrooms with frost on the desks in the morning. Some kind of
running up the hill...My father won the Latin prize and I remember two
large books that were the reward. He was then to become a B-24 pilot in World War II. I visited the school sometime in the 1960s and
remember seeing Fred Hadden's name carved into a bench...or something...this was
a long time ago...I was ten or eleven at the time. He died climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland in a sudden storm very
shortly after leaving (Midland)."
- Joseph Hadden
