Cross Country: Midland girls ran a great race at the league finals on Wednesday, with Phoebe Stokes '12 placing 7th overall, and eight out of nine girls setting personal records. Although Midland beat Dunn and Thacher in the race, we lost our third-place standing in the league to Laguna in a tie-breaker. Thanks to this tie, however, the Midland Girls' Cross Country team has been awarded a vacated spot at the first round of Preliminary State competitions.  All nine Midland runners will be traveling to Mt. Sac on November 14th. They will be the first Midland girls' team to compete at this level, so congratulations to Heather Waldroup '10, Tammy Yang '10, Nessa Ryan '11, Kaya Lindsay '11, Callie Bryan '12, Lily Brand '12, Chelsea Young '13, Renata Lozito '13, and of course, top runner Phoebe Stokes!!!
The Boys' Cross Country team held off Cate in the league finals on Wednesday to place 2nd overall for the season.  This is the first time that the boys have placed 2nd in the Condor league and they were led by Evan Kidd's '11 personal best of 16:44 on the Dunn course.  Evan placed 4th overall and had the best Midland time in at least the last ten years.  Seniors Beau Lino and Gus Dene placed 13th and 14th respectively while Kevin Jung '11, Marcus Schmidt '12, and Charlie Lehman '13 beat out Cate's fifth runner in the last mile to place 21st, 22nd and 23rd.  The Boys have qualified for the State Prelims at Mt. SAC for the fourth year in a row.  Congratulations!!!
Girls' Volleyball: Congratulations to both JV and Varsity teams for winning their final games on Wednesday against Oak Grove.

  • Marine Biology Class Trip: Sunday, Lise and Jeff Goddard took the class on a low tide trip to the Ellwood boulder field. Lise reports, "It was a gorgeous, sunny afternoon tide, with no fewer than 10 octopuses, several large crabs out in the open, several red sea hares that readily inked, lush algae.  One of our little guys, Will, flipped a rock and found a rare nudibranch that Jeff has never seen before, and that few on the coast have seen - Babakina festiva.  A great day." The students who went were sophomore Kendrick Holmes, and seniors Dominic Cala, Gus Dene, Beau Lino, William Johnston-Carter, Inochi Fukui, and Kyle Hong.

  • Equestrians: On Sunday, riders Ruby Goldberg '11 and Meghan Brown '11 went on an overnight horse camping trip led by Equestrian Director Martina Svennungsen.  This year the semi-annual horse trip changed the venue to Rancho Oso, a historic guest ranch with camping facilities nestled in the gorgeous mountains outside of Santa Barabara adjacent to thousands of acres of Forest Service Land to explore.  Riders had great weather, a brilliant moon, and fabulous trail rides both Sunday and Monday.

  • 350 Dinner: Bill McKibben's efforts to educate the world about the benefits of a return to 350 parts per million carbon in the atmosphere (350 day )...it is possible to change the tide if we all consider ways to cut back on carbon emissions.  Midland is a model.  "350 Day" was over Fall Break (Saturday, Oct. 24) - Lise Goddard made a little 350 sign and the Goddard family and a few other faculty members gathered at the solar panels for a photo.  That night the Farm and Garden faculty and spouses gathered at Ireland house to honor 350 Day with a dinner menu of all ingredients from Midland or locally grown -- Midland beef, tomatoes, 3 varieties of lettuce, scallions, zucchini, yellow squash, potatoes, onions, garlic, shallots,  flowers from Katie Isaacson's family ranch, home made bread, and dessert of Midland 3 melon salad.
