Readers: Miranda Poett, '10, and Ian
Cummings will be among those reading in the
Solvang Library's 2009 Banned Book Reading of
Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, on
Wednesday, September 30, at 7 PM. The
reading is part
of Santa Barbara Reads, a community reading
program of the Santa Barbara Public Library,
which is sponsoring several events related to
Fahrenheit 451 throughout the week.

Beginning on Thursday, September 24th, four
boys from the
Midland Cross Country team, Beau Lino '10,
Gus Dene '10, William Johnston-Carter '10 and
Peter King '12, took a weekend camping
trip/workout to the Eastern Sierras with
their coaches Don Redl and Chris Rea, as well
as Rob Hopkinson. The group started out at
the Onion Valley trailhead at 9,200 feet in
elevation and will cross into the mountains
via the Kearsarge Pass at 11,700 feet before
connecting to the John Muir Trail.

Fire Crew in Training: Freshmen Miles
Dakin, Weiler Shafer, Kirby Kersels, Micah
Kalem and
Miguel Provencio are the Midland volunteer
student
fire brigade, and have been training each
Thursday
afternoon with Ben Munger '79. They finished
training this week which culminated in a
fire hose game on Kimptom
Field.

Midland Hikers: Saturday morning the 9th
graders and 101 and 102 teachers hiked Pistol
Springs for an all morning hike. The Grahams
and Bradys ran into them way up in the hills
while out riding and noted, "What FUN they
seemed to be having!"

9th Grade Overnight Camping: Saturday
night, 9th-grade Female Prefects Hyemin and
Heather
took the 9th grade girls for overnight
camping on Tank Mesa, while the 9th grade
boys had an overnight in Long House that
included a movie.

Marine Biology Class Field Trip: Sunday,
seniors Dom, Gus, Beau, Inoche, Kyle, and
William, and sophomores Savannah B. and
Kendrick went with Lise and Jeff Goddard to
Montana de Oro on an exploratory field trip.

Athletics:
Cross-Country: On Wednesday, Midland
hosted its first Cross Country meet of the
season. Local teams from Dunn and Santa Ynez
participated on a hot 103 degree day.
Despite the heat, Evan Kidd '11 set a
personal record with a winning time of 17:22
to help lead the boys to a victory over Dunn.
The final score was Santa Ynez (22), Midland
(33) and Dunn (81). Five boys came in the
top ten and seven of Midland's runners came
in before the first Dunn runner! The top
runner on the girls' team was Phoebe Stokes '12
with a 7th place finish and three of the
girls were in the top ten. The final score
was Santa Ynez (21), Dunn (49) and Midland
(51). Both teams are looking forward to the
first league meet next week at Midland.
Girls Volleyball: Both JV and Varsity
won their games against Oak Grove on
Saturday! JV plays Orcutt at home today at 4
PM, and Besant Hill at home on Saturday at 2
PM. Varsity game follows at 3 PM.
Next Wednesday, September 30th, Midland will
host the first Condor League Cross Country
meet of the season. The boys are looking to
make it to the State Prelims for the fourth
time in as many years while the girls begin
their attempt for their first trip to the
State Prelims. Over 200 boys and 100 girls
will be racing on Midland's property with the
boys' race starting at 3pm and the girls' to
follow at 3:30pm.
