MIDLAND MINUTES

  • Class Elections: The following students have been chosen as president of their respective classes: Gus Dene (senior), Evan Kidd (junior), Marcus Schmidt (sophomore), Diego Marcogliese (freshman). They will all serve on the Student-Faculty Council for the fall semester along with the two School Prefects, and Mara Gabriel, the junior-at-large representative, nominated by the seniors.

  • Birthday Celebration: Students celebrated JunJie's 18th birthday at the Svennungsen's house, and seniors Libang and Yuchen cooked the dinner. See photos from the celebration as well as photos of students "doing more at Midland" in our September photo album.

  • Midland 102 students have been making their own garden plots in Midland's 8-acre organic garden. The students will tend their plots throughout the year. Rob Hopkinson and Hayley Anson teach the course, new this year at Midland.

  • Tarantula Makes an Announcement at Assembly: On Monday, a tarantula walked into the middle of the assembly prior to lunch. It was shown respect and carefully placed back into the woods away from Middle Yard.

  • Welcome Anthony, Katie and Dr. Schulman! Joining Midland's faculty this year are Anthony Harvey '04, Midland's Intern, who graduated from Willamette University, will assist with the drama program, cooking and various other projects; Katie Isaacson, a graduate of Thacher and Colby College, will be helping Ben Munger '79 and Midland 102 in the garden; and Dr. Elliott Schulman, who is Midland's doctor and works with Donna in the Health Department. Dr. Schulman (who replaces Dr. Karen Sandquist who moved back to Colorado) was previously the Santa Barbara County Public Health Director.

  • Athletics:
Cross-Country: Next Wednesday, September 23, Midland will host a Friendly Santa Ynez Valley Meet with Dunn and Santa Ynez Valley High School.
Girls Volleyball: The first games for JV and Varsity are at Oak Grove on Saturday, September 19, at 2 and 3 PM, respectively.
See Midland's sports section online for a full schedule and updated photographs.

  • Actual Midland Round-Up: Katie Isaacson and Ben Munger '79 were successful in a roundup today. They rode the Graham horses, Bear and Marco, to search for a stray cow (apparently on the lam for awhile) and returned her to her pasture with the other Poett cattle.

  • Midland's Fifth Annual Round-Up: All current families are invited to join us for this year's Round-Up on October 3-4. This is our first event on campus where families have a chance to participate in Midland activities. See the invitation and schedule.
