Brain Bowl: The annual class
competition is taking place today at 3:30 PM.
Seniors Frances King and Silviano Valdez will
be able to participate in Thinking Beyond
Borders next year, thanks to a
generous gift from the Carmen M. Christensen
Trust.
On Wednesday May 20, faculty members Lise
Goddard and Chris Rea with students Frances
King '09, Silviano Valdez '09, Meghan Brown
'11, Kevin
Jung '11, and alumna Emma Munger '08 attended
a lecture by William
McDonough, author of "Cradle to
Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things," at
Campbell Hall, a program of UCSB Arts and
Lectures. "Cradle to Cradle" is a text that
Frances and Silviano will read next year as
they attend Thinking Beyond
Borders.
On Tuesday morning, students in the Modern
China class hosted a U.S. - China foreign
policy forum. Presenters Silviano Valdez '09,
Sopia Rocca '09, Frances King '09, and Meghan
Brown '11 each promoted a specific U.S.
policy toward
China to an audience of about 20 students and
teachers. Colin Weaver '09 and Libang Shi '10
served
as expert panelists, asking a series of
questions to each speaker throughout the
forum. Audience members were asked to vote on
which policy they preferred both before and
after the forum in order to assess which
speaker's presentation was most persuasive.
Sophia (policy: Contain China) and Silviano
(policy: Promote Free Trade with China) tied
with seven audience votes each. In addition,
both Colin and Libang voted for Silviano's
position, making him the winner of the forum.
The event was the culmination of weeks of
dedicated research and preparation by Modern
China students.
