May News from Midland:
| Midland Field Day and Biathlon |
 |
|
During the last week of classes, and after
the regular sports season has ended, the
Midland community holds two fun annual
events, Field Day and the Triathlon,
organized by faculty members Derek
Svennungsen and Don Redl, respectively.
Field Day is a competition between classes,
and the seniors reigned this year. The
Triathlon became a Biathlon, due to the Rez
being closed. Faculty member Chris Rea, and
senior Joey Hermosillo (in the photo above)
were the winning team
in the Biathlon.

ATTENTION MIDLAND CLASS OF 1959: Grant
Cooper will be hosting a gathering
for the
Class of '59 at his home on June 20th.
Scott Richards '72 reports, "my wife
and I sold out of the U.S. and have been
traveling the world ever since, visiting
locals of both of our life long dreams now,
as we really never know how long we'll have
on this ever changing and shrinking world,
losing it's unique and interesting diversity
everyday. That place in the sun, that
'paradise' that we all dream of and what we
have been searching for, was found in
ourselves and what you do with the time at
the helm. I feel that Midland has played a
huge part in shaping my life by 'teaching me'
to learn. I am better equipped for the
challenges that we face being homeless and
country-less for the first times in our lives
and know that I can survive anything adhering
to my Alma-Mater's basic, timeless
philosophies. I plan on stopping in some time
in the next year during our American visit
coming up this summer. And yes, I too
remember Ben Rich's classes and
ducking a chalk eraser a few times. Best
Regards, Scott & Sally Richards - Thailand."
Jennifer Stine '82 is working as a
pediatric physical therapist at a facility in
Carmel, CA, that uses horses.
ATTENTION MIDLAND CLASS OF 1999: Cooper
Brossy is the contact person for the
Class of '99 reunion event for the weekend of
June 19-21.
Alexis Kidd '08 and Katie Cromack '08
spoke to the Midland community this month
about their experience this past year with
Thinking Beyond Borders. The two gave a
moving presentation on the different
countries that they were involved in,
including South Africa, Ecuador, Peru, China,
Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. Katie and
Alexis gave contrasting views of what they
experienced, including anecdotes of their
work in various social contexts on issues
such as health and sanitation facilities,
AIDs clinics, teaching English and others. It
was clear they also had fun when they hiked
in the Andes, scuba dived in Thailand, and
saw the wildlife of Africa.

Students Raise Money for Darfur |
|
|
|
Midland School students Silviano Valdez '09
and Kevin Jung '11 have been raising funds
for women in Darfur over the last two months. The
genocide in Darfur has led to a situation
where women are putting themselves in grave
danger every time they leave camp to gather
wood for their cooking. The money these two
students have raised goes to buy solar
cookers, which greatly reduces the amount of
time the women have to travel. The name of
the project is "Solar Cooker Project:
Protecting and Empowering the Women of
Darfur" by the Jewish
World Watch Organization. The Jewish
World Watch Organization recognized the two
students with a certificate of appreciation.
Their fund just passed the $1,000 mark, and
has been matched by Midland alumnus Van
Kelsey '39. Silviano and Kevin have raised
their money by selling soft drinks, with
patrons paying on an honor system.
This is the second consecutive year that
Midland students have raised $1,000 to match
Van Kelsey's donation. Last year's effort was
spearheaded by Midland teacher Ian Cummings,
and this year's effort was led completely by
Silviano and Kevin.
"I was inspired to raise money because of my
World Studies class where I learned that
women in Darfur were raped when they just
went to collect firewood," said Kevin.
"I have learned that even a small group of
students can make a big difference in the
world," said Silviano.
