Santa Barbara Jesusita Fire Update:
There continues to be no threat to Midland
and the surrounding areas, and the fire is 95%
contained. Full containment is expected on
May 20th. We are closely monitoring
the situation with the county, and we have
emergency and evacuation procedures in place.
Should we have to evacuate, parents/guardians
will be notified via email and/or from
advisors' home phones. See local news updates.
Swine Flu Update: The threat has
decreased. Students
and staff members who experience flu symptoms
will be evaluated by Donna Williams, R.N. or Dr.

is one of
the 65 juniors nationwide to be accepted
from hundreds of applicants. For two weeks in

Thailand Experience: Tammy Yang '10
and Chloe Calder '12 will be traveling to
Thailand this summer with a program Inside Thailand, run by
Mac Bakewell, who has taken several Midland
alumni to Thailand in previous years. Both
Tammy and Chloe are beneficiaries of
financial support from one of those alums,
Kiki MacMillan '06, who loved her experience
with Inside Thailand so much that she offered
scholarship money so that current Midland
students might be able to enjoy the same
benefits she received.
Tuesday evening, Alexis Kidd '08 and
Katie Cromack '08 spoke to the Midland
community about their experience this past
year with Thinking Beyond
Borders. The two gave a moving
presentation on the different countries that
they were involved in, including South
Africa, Ecuador, Peru, China, Thailand,
Vietnam and Cambodia. Katie and Alexis gave
contrasting views of what they experienced,
including anecdotes of their work in various
social contexts on issues such as health and
sanitation facilities, AIDs clinics, teaching
English and others. It was clear they also
had fun when they hiked in the Andes, scuba
dived in Thailand, and saw the wildlife of
Africa. Seniors Silviano Valdez
and Frances King were both accepted into the
Thinking Beyond Borders program this year.
Tonight, Paul Gelles will give a talk,
"Culture Loss and Culture Gain: Chumash
History and the Impact of the Casino," to the
Midland
community.
Fundraising for Darfur: Silviano
Valdez '09 and Kevin Jung '11 have exceeded
their fundraising goal of $1,000 to raise
