MIDLAND MINUTES

  • Santa Barbara Jesusita Fire Update: Currently there is no threat to Midland and the surrounding areas. We are closely monitoring the situation with the county, and we have emergency and evacuation procedures in place. Should we have to evacuate, parents/guardians will be notified via email and/or from advisors' home phones. See local news updates.

  • Swine Flu Update: The threat has decreased at this time. Currently, students and staff members who experience flu symptoms will be evaluated by Donna Williams, R.N. or Dr. Sandquist. Appropriate care and/or further evaluation will be provided.

  • Junior Dance Weekend: Juniors have planned a lot of fun activities for this weekend.

  • Tomorrow, seven faculty members plan to run in the Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon. Runners are Jose Juan Ibarra '87, Don and Jill Redl, Chris Rea, Lise Goddard, Sarah Campbell, and Martina Svennungsen. Good luck!

  • Horse Camping Trip: On Sunday, Equestrian Program Director Martina Svennungsen and cowgirl friend Lisa Thompson, took seven riders (Steve Herron '09, Jessica Plumbley '09, Christine Neeley '09, Libang Shi '10, Miranda Poett '10, Kevin Jung '11, and Wes Harting '11) and nine horses to Montana De Oro for the spring Equestrian camping trip. Lisa, an experienced equestrian, added a new element to the camping trip by giving a crash course roping lesson and sharing cowgirl stories around the campfire. Sunday afternoon, students rode on the beach in an eerie, misty fog and then had glorious views on Monday's mountain ride.

  • The Garden students, Lily Brand '12, Savannah Bryant 12, Kyle Hong '10, Danny Lee '11, Hye-min Lee '10, Claire Sawyer '12, and Stacy Wirta '11, visited Clairmont Farms in Los Olivos on Wednesday afternoon. Farm owners Glenn and Merrill toured the group and explained the process of extracting oil by using a still to steam and separate out the oil before it's added to any number of the products they sell at the farm. The students returned to campus with sachets of lavender that should scent their bureau drawers for at least 10 years.

  • Club night on Tuesday, the group Dear Indugu played alternative rock for several interested students. Using acoustic and electric guitar, as well as harmonica, the two-member group played several songs.

  • Next Tuesday evening, Alexis Kidd '08 and Katie Cromack '08 will talk to the Midland community about their experience this past year with Thinking Beyond Borders.
