MIDLAND MINUTES

  • On Sunday, April 12th, Midland's Mason Willrich Speaker on Global Environmental Issues was John Elder, Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Middlebury College, awarded Vermont Professor of the Year in 2008 by the Carnegie Foundation. John spoke about educating in the here and now as a way to go deeper in educating for a sense of place. He described grasses as a pathway downward to understanding past landscapes - human and ecological. He said that giving ourselves to attentiveness in the here and now gives us wonder and sympathy, and these are the whole package. He talked about the simplicity of Midland and working to meet our basic needs as conducive to this.
