MIDLAND MINUTES

  • Sunday night was Shakespeare Night at Midland, where several students and faculty members performed unusual usual acts.

  • On Saturday, faculty members Chris Rea and Sarah Cambell, and Daniel Nimmo '11 rode in and finished the Solvang Century Bike Ride.

  • Fundraiser for Darfur: Silviano Valdez '09 and Kevin Jung '11 are raising money to purchase "solar cookers" (solar ovens) to send to women in refugee camps in Darfur. The ovens ensure that the women will not have to leave the camps in search of firewood (often for days at a time), where they're vulnerable to attacks, rape, etc. So far, Silvi and Kevin have raised over $500 (in one week!), and their goal is to raise $1000, where their money will be matched, for a total of $2000 raised.

  • See Geology Class photos. Apologies for the incorrect link in last week's Minutes.

  • Chris Rea is attending the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Conference in New Orleans this week. Chris was named an NSTA New Science Teacher Academy Fellow for the second year in a row. See the News Press article from September.

  • On Monday, about 50 students and faculty from The Anacapa School in Santa Barbara visited Midland. Intern Gillian Kinnear '04 led them on a hike.

  • Steve Herron '09 and Kevin Jung '11, took part in a "Fox Hunt" on a ranch in Arroyo Grande recently.

  • College Acceptances: See the list of colleges where Midland seniors have been accepted so far.

  • Lacrosse:
Congratulations to Midland's Varsity Boys' Lacrosse Team on their win over Dunn 6-5, in a 6x overtime game last Saturday! Evan Kidd '11 was great in the goal. The team lost 4-7 on Wednesday against York School from Monterey County. Varsity Girls lost their first game against Dunn, 1-8, but played well together as a team.
On Saturday, Boys play at OVS at 3:30 PM on the lower field, and Girls play OVS at Thacher at 3 PM. See the sports schedule and photos.
