  • Congratulations to William Johnston-Carter '10, recipient of the 2009 Summer Internship Program Award! He will be attending Interlochen Center for the Arts summer program in Michigan, focusing on filmmaking. And, William won first place in the high school division of the SLO International Film Festival, March 6-15, 2009! View his winning short film, "The To-Do List."

  • Faculty member Ian Cummings still has 2 appearances in Valley Community Theatre's production of "Enchanted April," at the Los Olivos Grange Hall at 7:30 PM, March 13-14. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $15 at the Book Loft, Santa Ynez Valley Coffee Company, or El Rancho Market.

  • 4th Annual Stock Market Competition: This spring 34 students and faculty are competing in the 4th Annual Stock Market competition. Each competitor starts with $1,000,000 in cash to invest in stocks and options. Students learn how to trade stocks, short or long, how to conduct limit and stop-loss orders, and how to trade on the margin using an online simulator through the Investopedia.com website. The goal of the game is to develop an understanding of investing principles and to cultivate an awareness of how current events impact the financial system. This year's game will be particularly exciting given the enormous uncertainty in the market right now. Usually Midland students do better than the market average, so I'm excited to see how things turn out this year.

  • Ben '79 and Laurie Munger led a successful Manzana-Sisquoc Loop hike last Friday through Tuesday. See Geology Class photos.

  • Last Saturday, four students from Don Redl's Finance class, Bryan Puha '09, Steve Herron '09, Kevin Carney '09 and Silviano Valdez 09, volunteered at Allan Hancock College as part of the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The program provides free tax preparation for low-income individuals and families. The students completed their training by completing four actual returns for local families. More of the students will be volunteering this Saturday. The goal is to have the students work with families from the Santa Ynez Valley in conjunction with People Helping People and the United Way.
