UCSB Environmental Studies Students Camp at Midland
    UCSB Env Studies Students

On January 31st, 50 or so students and faculty from UCSB's Environmental Studies program visited Midland and camped overnight.

    Thinking Beyond Borders

More than 20 Midland students went to Avila Beach recently to hear about the "Thinking Beyond Borders" (TBB) program. Katie Cromack '08 and Alexis Kidd '08 spoke via Skype from South Africa about their current experiences in the program.

TBB is a 35-week program to educate youth about the economic, political, and cultural realities of our world while empowering them with the tools to create proactive social change. TBB is a highly selective program designed for 16 students who have graduated high school and deferred their college enrollment. The program consists of an orientation followed by one month in each of five Core Countries. Upon completion of the program, Katie and Alexis will attend Stanford and Earlham, respectively.

    Midland's Experiential Week
    Experiential Week 09

During the week of February 9-13, Midland students participated in activities by class. The purpose of this week each year is that we take trips and do activities with entire classes that supplement our curriculum and our mission, with our students having experiences in the field rather than the classroom.

Freshmen went on local hikes, visited the Sedgwick Reserve and Point Sal, and created artwork and projects on campus.

Sophomores installed a 3.5-kW photovoltaic array that ties into the electricity meter at Stillman Hall (see photo above). This marked the 6th year in a row that Sophomore classes helped install a solar array on campus, a claim that is unique to Midland School. Now, over 15% of Midland's campus electricity needs (not including faculty homes) are met with solar power. The sophomores also toured the Morro Bay Power Plant and Diablo Canyon's nuclear power plant visitor center.

Juniors went to Mascota, Mexico for two weeks, in an effort to further enrich our language program and promote global awareness, where they were immersed in the culture, and each student lived with a different host family and attended La Preperatoria de Mascota School with their "siblings." Mascota is a small town at the base of the Sierra Madre, 225 miles from Guadalajara and 60 miles from Puerto Vallarta.

Seniors had the opportunity to explore a personalized learning experience in an area of interest and to develop a sense of self reliance beyond the Midland community. This year, the topics included job shadowing a reporter for Chattanooga Times Free Press, physicians at Sansum Medical Clinic, post production sound professional at Oregon Sound Recording, working with non-profit organizations Global Majority and Orange County People for Animals, an Eagle Scout project and a Midland property solo.
