On Sunday night, Chicano playwrite and
professor of theater, Dr. Carlos Morton, gave
a talk at Midland. Spanish IV students Dom Cala
'10, Miranda Poett '10, Savannah Cooley '12, and
Martin Huerta '11 read some scenes from his
play, El
Jardin, a Chicano-ized version of Adam and
Eve and the fall of man, filled with humor
and social commentary. The students and
faculty enjoyed the reading greatly and
Carlos provided social context, explaining
how Chicano playwriting emerged from the
Teatro Campesino movement of the late 60s and
early 70s. He also talked about the art of
playwriting in general and the ways in which
his works bring together questions or art,
identity, and politics.
