On Saturday, January 24th, Ben Munger '79,
Lise Goddard and Chris Rea attended the
Schools Going Green conference at Cate
School. The conference demonstrated an
interest and commitment by independent
schools in our region - Cate, Besant Hill,
Ojai Valley, Marymount, Campbell Hall,
Thacher, Dunn, and several others, to begin
taking steps to make our campuses more
sustainable and better models for our
students. Lise reported, "There was an
easy-going air of collegiality and
collaboration in our discussions; we are all
in this together, and we can all support and
learn from each other. I'm glad that Cate
School sparked this dialogue, and I know it's
just the beginning."
Also on Saturday, January 24th, Ben Munger
'79, Lise Goddard (Stanford '92), Chris Rea,
Lynda Cummings (Stanford '87) and Sarah
Campbell attended "Leading Matters"
conference in LA to
hear Stanford professors give talks on
sustainability in the 21st century, the
emerging water crisis in the American west,
the state of California public schools,
China-US relations, three interpretations of
the supreme court's role according to the
Constitution, why we should worry more about
inequality than racism, and the creative
process. "The Stanford Challenge" is the
university's goal to "build a university for
the 21st century and beyond" by seeking
solutions in human health, environment and
sustainability, international relations, and
multidisciplinary research and by educating
leaders at all levels. Lise said, "For me,
it was instructive to hear where professors
at the leading edge of ecology and
sustainability science are in their dialogue
of sustainable solutions."
