MLK Day Activities: On Tuesday,
January 20th, the entire school joined
together to watch the historic inauguration
of Barack Obama and to honor Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day, which was on the
previous day. Lise Goddard opened the day by
sharing an inspired poem, a pantoum, "The Politics of Hope."
Following President Obama's speech, we
listened to the wisdom of Babatunde Folayemi,
who also shared a video of the 30 human rights,
followed by lunch and an exercise led by
Silviano Valdez '09 and Andrew Hurley '09,
who attended a Student Diversity Leadership
Conference. Then each class met as a group
and answered questions which we will revisit
on next year's MLK day. See photos.
On Saturday, January 24th, Ben Munger '79,
Lise Goddard and Chris Rea will attend a
sustainability conference with 15 California
Schools at Cate School. Participants will
exchange ideas, best practices, concerns, and
start to develop networks to address
sustainability collaboratively.
Also on Saturday, January 24th, Ben Munger
'79, Lise Goddard (Stanford '92), Chris Rea,
Lynda Cummings (Stanford '87) and Sarah
Campbell will attend a Stanford Alumni event
in Los Angeles called "Leading Matters," to
hear Stanford professors give talks on a
number of issues including sustainability,
California schools, foreign and domestic
policy, brain research, race and inequality,
United States-China relations, and the
mounting water crisis in the American west.

Santa Barbara Film Fest, it has also been
