MIDLAND MINUTES

  • Happy New Year! We're back in full swing and hope everyone had a restful break.

  • Read Nora Wallace's article, "Living off the land : $4.5 million grant means Midland students will forever be surrounded by untouched acreage," which appeared in the Santa Barbara News-Press on December 17, 2008.

  • Midland's Environmental Advisory Board met in the Library on Thursday, January 8th, to discuss Midland's Environmental Action Plan and Midland's Carbon Neutral Plan (written by Santa Barbara's Community Environmental Council). Those in attendance were Lise Goddard, Will Graham, Mason Willrich '50, Jim Poett '66, Bill Elmendorf '75, Peter Schuyler, Ben Munger '79, Bob Wilkinson, Lisa Stratton, Kate McCurdy, Josh Hahn, Laurie Munger, Shawn McVicar, Marguerite Graham, Karen Readey, and students Blaze Elation '09, Kevin Carney '09, Miranda Poett '10, Mariah Chen '11, Meghan Brown '11, Peter King '12 and Erin Tyler '12.

  • New Horse: On your next visit to Midland, look for a new horse in the front pasture across from the Midland Garden. "Bear", a black bay Quarter horse, has joined the campus as Will Graham's personal all terrain vehicle. Will and Marguerite spent the recent Holiday Break exploring the campus on horseback. There is no better way to enjoy Midland's incomparable trails and views than from a saddle atop a high meadow. (The Graham's owned 3 horses during their Maine years and had a daughter who competed in Three Day Eventing.)

  • Guest Speaker: On Sunday January 4th, Michelle McKinley, who teaches Law at the University of Oregon, gave a talk at Midland. Michelle is a lawyer and legal anthropologist, who, after earning a Masters degree in Anthropology from Oxford and a Law degree from Harvard, became Executive Director of Cultural Survival and founded the Amazonian Peoples Resources Initiative (APRI). She showed some amazing slides of the Amazonian region where she worked for several years with the remote Urarina people and she talked about her work with APRI.

  • Cattle Herding 101: On Monday, while driving to Midland on Figueroa Mountain Road, Director of Communications Karen Readey was asked to assist our neighbors at the Chamberlin Ranch to use her car to help herd the cattle coming toward her on the road. Never a dull moment on that road!

  • Athletics:
Basketball: Midland's basketball team plays Valley Christian in Santa Maria this afternoon at 4:30 PM.

    Soccer:
Varsity Girls beat Cate's JV team 4-1. Becca Towne '09 had 3 goals.
