  • Annual Midland Thanksgiving
    Ben and Laurie Munger

Midland's Annual Thanksgiving events were enjoyed by over 450 friends and family members. The boys and girls varsity soccer teams both beat the alum teams, Colin Weaver '09 gave a presentation on his summer internship program, and a hilarious rendition of O Brother, Where Art Thou was performed before a packed amphitheater. The traditional Thanksgiving meal was one to remember, as all dishes were prepared from scratch.

In the photo above, Ben '79 and Laurie Munger slice turkey for the feast.

    Class of 1964

In September, the Class of 1964 had a mini-reunion in Greece (photo above). Jim and Soula Whittle hosted Tom Hazlet, and Jonathan and Laureen Andrews at their home in Athens and in Batsi on the island of Andros.

Jon Lee '99 spent the past summer in the Czech Republic countryside at a mill, teaching art to an international group of kids and living at the sustainable farm there. Jon said, "While I was there, I kept thinking about how much this mill is like Midland. I had the most amazing and positive experience there."

On a recent visit to Baltimore, faculty member Karen Readey was able to enjoy a quick meal with Emma Munger '08, Sky Shin '08 and Ian Farmer '08, who are all freshman at MICA. When the waiter came by the table to ask how everything was, Ian replied, "We're right where we want to be!!"

James Rogers '03 is engaged to Anna Blair '03. Anna is attending the University of Texas Law School. Congratulations James and Anna!

Bill Dane '56 says "Best Wishes!" Visit his website at: www.billdane.com

    Conservation Easement Secures Midland's Property

The State of California Wildlife Conservation Board on Thursday, November 20, 2008, awarded the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County (Trust) a $4,155,000.00 grant that will be used to purchase a conservation easement on Midland School's property. The easement is a cooperative project between the Trust, The Trust for Public Land, and the California Transportation Commission. The easement will ensure that no future development may occur on 2,727 acres of the 2,860-acre property, and will preserve valuable watershed and oak habitat as well as protect rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. The easement will provide capital for the school's endowment, which, among other things, will enable the school to continue to provide a strong scholarship program. Midland School will continue to provide the hands-on, college preparatory learning experiences and utilize its land as an outdoor classroom as it has for 76 years.
