MIDLAND MINUTES

  • 300 members (about 60 families represented) of the Midland community enjoyed Midland's Fourth Annual Round-Up this past weekend! The seniors earned ice cream for their enthusiastic dress and participation on the dance floor. Thanks to all current families who joined us!


  • All Students: Please contact Jill Brady ASAP with your travel plans for Fall Break.


  • Interns Rob Hopkinson and Hayley Anson attended the Clairbourn School Fair in Pasadena on Tuesday and met many great students interested in Midland.


  • Faculty members Jose Juan Ibarra '87 and Paul Gelles took 5 students to the Chumash Pow Wow on Sunday. The students were Andrew Hurley '09, RossKellogg '09, Joey Hermosillo '09, Becca Towne '09, David Everding '09, and Marcus Schmidt '12. They watched the Grand Entry of all the beautifully dressed dancers in their regalia, ate Indian tacos and fry bread and perused the different booths. A good time was had by all.


  • Athletics:

    Cross Country: On Wednesday, October 8th, Midland attended a Condor League meet at Cate. Midland Boys took 2nd place. Sophomore Evan Kidd had Midland's fastest time of 18:04 and an 8th place finish overall. Midland beat Laguna again because of its strong pack of seven runners placing 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 16th overall. Peter King had our top freshman time this year, 19:20, which is also our second best freshman time in at least four years.

    Midland Girls was missing one of its top runners to injury, but the girls did well individually. Sophomore Rose Yates ran in 25:09 and was 14th place overall. Captains Blaze Elation '09 and Jessica Plumbley '09 both edged out runners in the last 100 meters. Freshman Phoebe Stokes, who joined the team on Wednesday, participated in her first practice by bravely racing at Cate! Our next meet will be a dual meet against Dunn on October 29th.

    Volleyball: The Varsity and JV Girls won their matches against Oak Grove on Saturday, and Varsity also won the match against Dunn's JV on Wednesday. Varsity's record is 4-0, JV's record is 2-0.

  • Vistors from the Trust for Pubic Land, Santa Barbara Land Trust, and the Wildlife Conservation Board toured Midland School's property on Wednesday, October 8th with Ranch Manager Ben Munger '79.


  • Interns Rob Hopkinson and Hayley Anson will be going to the Mayfield School Fair in Pasadena on Tuesday the 14th , and Derek Svennungsen will be in Corona del Mar Thursday the 16th for the Harbor Day School Fair. Please let friends in these areas know that they can stop by to meet us!


  • On Wednesday, October 8th, Head of School announced that Jessica Plumbley and Colin Weaver, both '09, were named as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
