As we stroll through the lazy days of summer, let's continue talking about July as Organizing Your Computer month. You may have your files organized and a system to manage your Inbox, but are you backing up your data? One bad virus or a fan that stops running to cool your computer down is all it takes to create a computer to crash.

Are You Backing Up Your Computer?
If you're not backing up by now, I don't know what to tell you; however,I think you already know. If you have a business - even if you just have photos and music on your home computer - you owe it to yourself to back up the data regularly.
 I met with a client last week and she said, she considered herself lucky, she's been in business two years and it's the first time her computer crashed. Ugh!
They say it's not the question of IF your computer will die / crash / stop working - it's a matter of WHEN it will.
It actually took me three times to learn my "back up" lesson (and quite embarrassingly over $1500 in restoration fees!) Then I learned about www.Mozy.com. For about $5/month, my data (including photos and music) is automatically backed up every single day. It is accessible remotely -- anywhere, anytime -- by internet access.
 What I love is that you don't have to buy hardware to back up your data. As a bonus, Mozy is environmentally friendly. Using Mozy gives me peace of mind and now I sleep a lot sounder knowing I've got all my data backed up. Sorry that this feels like an ad, but I don't know how else to emphasize to people that you really need to do something and this is just such and inexpensive way to do it.
Backing up your computer doesn't have to be difficult or expensive. You need to think of it as another form of insurance.
PS. Special Note to Paper Tiger Users: If you're using The Paper Tiger software, make sure you back up your data by exporting it to a .csv file occasionally. The automatic backup included in the program is not perfect when you change computers or if you need to reinstall programs. |
