Hello!
Current issues: time and money. No one seems to have enough of either. Yet many of us are wasting both daily.
I learned a long time ago that if you don't plan something, it rarely happens. So if you don't plan your budget and schedule your time (allowing a budget for your time), chances are, you'll find yourself out of both time and money.
Recently I prepared my budget for 2009 - common sense for most business owners. However, like goals, I wonder how often people stick to a budget once set up? Learning to run a business, a business division, or your life with a budget guides you to make decisions and take action . . . or not.
EMR - a new buzz... Electronic Medical Records. Remember HiPAA. Here's the next layer of the onion. In reviewing my budget, I had an expense that could have been avoided and my doctor could have prevented it. There's a prescription to this process. (sorry a little silly, I couldn't help it - it's getting late!).
This week I'll share the observations that I have had for my business and a personal medical expense story. Besides the obvious financial practice of a budget to save you time and money, we'll see how getting organized with a budget, your workspace and awareness with your healthcare providers will save time and money.

Financial reporting, the business of running numbers
With a detailed budget, I can observe my revenue for each line of business -- whether it's business consulting, one-off training or product sales. Ok, I know that's obvious, but the big surprise to me with a budget was "why was I spending so much time and money on 'xyz' when it only allocated for 7% of my total revenues?"
Because I have a budget in place, when the phone rings or I meet someone at a networking event and they want to meet with me about "xyz", I can quickly refer to my business budget and decide if the business revenue is balanced enough to include the expense or the time meeting with the person.
So I challenge you to go do that budget or review it and identify if you are spending your time on what makes financial sense to your bottom line.

Cost of Organizing Your Business
What about the time and money you spend looking for documents, recreating documents, lost sales or opportunities due to not having documents quickly accessible? These are real dollars lost due to being disorganized and not having an efficient system set up to respond to your daily business needs.
According to the Wall Street journal, "executives waste 30 minutes a day looking for misplaced information." That's 6 weeks per year! Check out this return on investment calculator on how to determine how much money you and your staff are wasting in time and money. Let me know if the investment is worth it. It runs as low as $159 (for a seminar) or $1,500(for a personal workspace) per employee
I often hear professionals say their too busy to get organized, or there is no intrinsic value... I'll let you be the judge.

EMR - Electronic Medical Records, saving time and money with your healthcare.
Recently, I started dealing more in the medical industry, setting up EMR (electronic medical records) systems. This is a huge source of lost time and money in doctor's office. However, the consequences here are much more significant than just a ROI, which you can check out on this calculator to see how it would impact your practice if you are a healthcare provider. (Please forward this email to your provider or someone who may want to learn more).
Background: A peer-reviewed article published 11/24/08 indicates that physicians who adopt and actively utilize electronic medical records (also known as "electronic heath records", "EMR" or "EHR") are almost 50% less likely to have a history of a paid medical malpractice claim. Yet, I hear they want to wait to see if Obama is going to offer a stimulus package so they can get a few bucks back, wait until it's absolutely required, or they are retiring shortly. You won't have much to retire on or have many assets to sell if you compromise someone's privacy or make a poor decision because the doc was in a rush reviewing a file.
Why do I care and how does it fit into organzing and saving time and money?
July 2007, I had a car accident July 2007 (rear-end as I was sitting still at a red light). Since then I have chronic headaches. My time and money now include monthly visits to a neurologist y to evaluate my progress. At a recent appointment, my doctore was getting a little baffled and said that it looked like I never had a brain scan. He decided to prescribe a scan just to make sure nothing was overlooked.
On my subsequent appointment to review the brain scan, he commented that he later noticed that I did, in fact, have a brain scan shortly after the accident and all appeared fine.
Hence my commitment to wanting to help the medical industry on board with EMR systems! I took another day out of my business to get the brain scan, scheduled another morning off for a follow up appointment, and the non-intrinsic value of $1,200 right out of my pocket for the co-pay. My doctor's oversight could have been avoided if there were systems in place to access all the information quickly and easily.
Look at this return on investment calculator for implementing an EMR system in your wellness center, practice, or clinic and then give me a call and I can demonstrate how quickly we can get your streamlined. From my personal experience, I now have an added passion to help doctors, healthcare and wellness providers to do the right thing and help us all be confident, safe and prudent with our time and money to a new level including our most valuable asset - ourselves! |
